Things to do in Hanoi for Tết 2023

Tết the Lunar New Year – is just around the corner, and as soon as the festival arrives, Hanoi will be quite different from its usual self. Most restaurants, cafes, and entertainment venues will close as people take a break from work to spend time with friends and family.

Still, if you know where to look, there are many places to go and things to do in Hanoi during Tết to enjoy the festive atmosphere. Below we’ve summed up 9 signature activities we Hanoians like to do for this occasion. Let’s take a look:

New year activities in Hanoi

1. Visit flower markets to bring home peach flowers

hanoi tet - flower market

A traditional Tết custom in northern Vietnamese provinces is to display blooming peach flowers in our houses to repel evil and bring luck and prosperity. As such, on the days leading up to Tết, hundreds of Hanoians flock to flower markets around the city to shop for a peach branch that suits their liking.

Visit these markets to see the verdant flowers in full bloom, watch people haggling and bantering with huge smiles, and just immerse in the festive atmosphere. The vibrant scene also provides plenty of opportunities for artistic pictures.

Of course, feel free to browse for your own peach branch to bring home. You’ll also see plenty of kumquat trees for sale – another common plant to use as Tết decorations.

A famous Tết flower market in Hanoi is:

Quảng An Flower Market
Address: 236 Âu Cơ Street, Tây Hồ District, Hanoi
Opening hours: 24 hours, Daily

2. Watch fireworks to usher in the new year

hanoi tet - fireworks 1

Welcoming the new year with a literal bang – that is, fireworks – is common in many cities around the world, and Hanoi is no exception. As the clock strikes midnight on the first day of the lunar year, there will be firework shows at multiple locations around the city, drawing crowds of spectators.

As with any other public gathering in Hanoi, the Hoàn Kiếm Lake is the most popular venue to see this event. From young couples hand-in-hand in the evening’s cold, fascinated children perched atop their parents’ shoulders, to groups of friends laughing and chatting, everyone flocks here in their best attire and brightest smiles, wishing strangers a happy new year.

Don’t miss out on the chance to share the joy with locals on this special occasion.

3. Take a stroll around the Old Quarter

hanoi tet - old quarter

Tết is a chance to see Hanoi in a different light. As most shops are closed and many people leave the city to return to their hometowns and celebrate the occasion with their families, the usually bustling streets take on a rarely seen quiet look.

Simply take a stroll around the city’s Old Quarter during this time to appreciate the archaic beauty it truly holds. You might catch intricate colonial-style engravings on balconies normally hidden behind fancy shop signs, or timeworn house façades you might have not noticed before as you were too busy rushing through the everyday traffic.

The smell of incense hanging in the air, the vibrant peach blossoms many houses display as decorations, and the occasional pedestrians walking the streets in traditional Vietnamese áo dài or formal suits further add to the peaceful, relaxing vibe.

4. Visit friends and families

hanoi tet - visiting friends
Tết is a time to visit your loved ones.

The true meaning of Tết is spending quality time with our loved ones. On the first days of the lunar year, people are expected to visit each other, simply to exchange good wishes and catch up over tea and mứt – Vietnamese sweet snacks made from dried fruits.

You can opt to visit someone right at the turn of the year and perhaps earn the honor of doing “xông đất” for them – meaning to become the first person to enter their house in the new year.

hanoi tet - li xi
Giving red envelopes with money to children serves as a good wish.

It’s believed that having someone with the matching Eastern Zodiac sign performing xông đất can bring great fortune to the entire household for the year. You might or might not be that someone, so wait until you’re invited first before coming in.

Also remember to prepare red envelopes with money to gift to the children of the houses you’re visiting. The amount can be as little as VND10,000 (~USD0.43) or as much as VND500,000 (~USD21.33) – anything you want. It’s simply a gesture of good will, a wish that the children will grow up healthy and successful.

Religious sites to visit in Hanoi during Tết

For many Vietnamese people, visiting temples and pagodas during Tết to pray for a prosperous year is simply a must. Check out these religious sites in Hanoi to share the joy.

5. Pray at the Trấn Quốc Pagoda

hanoi tet - tran quoc pagoda

At over 1,500 years old, the Trấn Quốc Pagoda is considered the oldest pagoda in Hanoi. Its rich history, prime location at Hanoi’s West Lake, and well-maintained space make it a major center for Buddhist activities in the capital city.

The pagoda boasts magnificent architecture, the centerpiece of which is an 11-storey tower surrounded by smaller stupas. There are also spacious courtyards decorated by Bodhi trees, golden Buddha statues, and antique-looking shrines.

Come Tết, expect the entire venue to be filled with the scent of incense and burning votive paper as hundreds of believers flock here to pray. It’s basically a cultural event in its own right, so if you’re excited to see more of the local religious activities, Trấn Quốc Pagoda is well worth a visit.

Address: Thanh Niên Street, Tây Hồ District, Hanoi
Opening hours: Tue-Sun 8am-11.30am & 1.30pm-4pm | Closed on Mondays

6. Visit Phủ Tây Hồ to learn more about traditional Vietnamese beliefs

Like the Trấn Quốc Pagoda, Phủ Tây Hồ is another notable worship site next to the West Lake, but it serves a very different purpose. While there are still shrines paying tribute to Buddha, the main altar is dedicated to the Mother Goddess – one of the four Immortal Saints in Vietnamese folklore.

The Goddess is the central worship figure of Đạo Mẫu – a folk belief system in Vietnam characterized by shamanic rituals where priests would invite the Goddess and other deities to ceremonially inhabit their bodies and give out blessings to spectators.

These summoning rituals won’t be held during Tết and people simply come here to light incense and pray, but nonetheless, Phủ Tây Hồ offers a glimpse into the traditional spiritual life of the Vietnamese people.

Address: 52 Đặng Thai Mai Street, Tây Hồ District, Hanoi

7. Ask for calligraphy pieces at the Temple of Literature

At a millennium old, the Temple of Literature is known as Vietnam’s first university, an esteemed place where brilliant minds throughout history dedicated themselves to scholarly pursuits. Today, it stands as a major historical attraction and place of worship in Hanoi.

During Tết, many people like to come here to pray for academic or career success. It is also the custom for visitors to ask for a piece of calligraphic writing from the calligraphers who’ll set up shop here for the occasion.

@missyhien

The writings are of auspicious phrases such as Lộc (祿, or Fortune), Thọ (, or Longevity), or Tài (, or Talent), written in either Vietnamese or Sino-Vietnamese characters on bright red paper. They are to be displayed in one’s house for good luck.

Address: 58 Quốc Tử Giám Street, Đống Đa District, Hanoi
Opening hours: 8am-5pm, Daily

8. Embark on a pilgrimage amidst natural scenery at the Perfume Pagoda

hanoi tet - huong pagoda

Chùa Hương, or the Perfume Pagoda, is another Buddhist site you can visit from Hanoi, but this one also doubles as a travel destination and sightseeing spot. Located 60km from Hanoi’s center, amidst beautiful landscapes, it’s in just the right spot for a one-day trip from the city.

Though we call it a pagoda, Chùa Hương is actually a huge complex of several shrines and temples built around the Hương Tích Mountains – a limestone mountain cluster with a charming river winding its way in between.

You’ll have to take a ferry ride through the river to appreciate the rustic scenery and visit shrines dedicated to historical figures and folk heroes, before arriving at the base of the main mountain, at the top of which is the Hương Tích Cave – a massive cave with Buddhist altars that serves as the complex’s centerpiece.

The Hương Tích Cave attracts huge crowds during Tết.

Dedicated worshipers can scale the hundreds of stairs leading up to the cave to show their faith, while casual visitors can opt to ride a cable car to the top for a more relaxing trip.

Unsurprisingly, Chùa Hương receives a substantial number of visitors on the first days of the lunar year, to the point where simply visiting it during this period is considered attending a Tết festival.

9. Đống Đa Festival – a tribute to a great Vietnamese emperor

hanoi tet - dong da festival

If you’re in Hanoi during Tết, consider dropping by the Đống Đa Mound on the 5th day of the new year to attend the Đống Đa Festival. It commemorates Emperor Quang Trung, who lived in the 18th century and played a crucial role in defending Vietnam’s sovereignty against foreign invaders.

For the main ceremonies, respected elders dress up as feudal government officials carrying palanquins of offerings to Emperor Quang Trung’s temple at the venue to make their tribute. Performers in colorful attires then take the stage to recreate the emperor’s great victories.

The festival features traditional folk dances.

Visitors will also get to watch folk dances, lion and dragon dances, and music performances, as well as participate in traditional group games such as tug-of-war.

Mầm coffee tea beer – a green cafe with a rustic vibe and verdant surroundings

Cafes with a green vibe have become more and more common throughout Saigon. Sadly, the illusion of being away from the dusty city sometimes shatters once you look out the window.

Mầm coffee tea beer manages to avoid this problem by dedicating an entire space deep inside an alley, complete with a pond and wooden structures for a fantastic countryside experience right in Saigon.

Countryside-inspired cafe with a quaint cottage and calming scenery

Mầm coffee tea beer_entrance

Located on 28 Thảo Điền Street, you will have to walk for a couple of minutes into this alley before reaching the actual location.

Mầm coffee tea beer_drinking space

With a small cottage surrounded by plants, rustic architecture, and vegetable fields, this cafe brings nostalgia to those whose homes might be far from the city. A great temporary solution for those who are a bit homesick.

Mầm coffee tea beer_playground

There is a nearby river that adds to the calming mood of the scenery and gorgeous photo moments for Instagrammers.

The cafe also has cute dogs frolicking around the area. Petting them might be a hard task, however, due to their shyness.

Mầm coffee tea beer offers a wide variety of drinks – from coffee, tea, and fresh fruit juices to healthy snacks such as yogurt with jam. While the menu does not follow the countryside theme, its deliciousness trumps all complaints.

A recommendation that we found delightful was the red artichoke tea (VND55,000, ~USD2.33), a surprisingly tangy tea that hits you deep with an energetic sour note – perfect for those hot, tiring days.

Mầm coffee tea beer – a cafe with green surroundings and charming decor

Mầm coffee tea beer is a gorgeous addition to the list of green cafes around Saigon, but this time in a bigger scale – with some fantastic decorations for gorgeous photos.

Do note that the cafe does not have air conditioning, and despite the presence of trees and a large body of water, it can get quite hot sometimes, so dress accordingly.

Even if you’re not interested in taking photos, this is still a place worth exploring. There are some delicious nearby restaurants when you’re feeling a bit hungry after, so check this place out when you have the chance!

Address: 28 Thảo Điền Street, Thảo Điền Ward, District 2, Hồ Chí Minh City, walk straight into the alley for several minutes and you’ll find the cafe’s entrance.

Walk up the spiral staircase to get to the main lounging area on the second floor, which boasts raw brick walls and plenty of seating options, from wooden chairs at long tables, to armchairs and sofas.

On the walls are decorative pictures and shelves bearing cute little ornaments such as flower vases and pots.

You’ll also find more tables on the third floor, which has plenty of artificial flowers hanging from the ceiling and a giant mirror occupying an entire wall, giving the space an airy feel.

Plenty of options for drinks and pastries

ante salted caramel cream coffee

In terms of drinks, we tried the coffee with salted caramel cream (VND50,000, ~USD2.12) and was hooked. The slightly salty taste of the caramel goes well with the coffee for a fulfilling sip.

ante tea

Of course, if you’re not much of a coffee drinker, the menu also has no shortage of options for tea and other drinks. The peach tea with orange slices and lemongrass (VND50,000, ~USD2.12) is a popular choice for something fruity and refreshing.

Giác Lâm Pagoda was built back in 1744 and it is one of the oldest temples in Saigon. With its unique architecture and historical religious artifacts, this temple is a must-go for those interested in Buddhist culture.

Even if you’re not interested in religious histories, the temple’s signature seven-storied stupa and Buddhist-style garden provide some rustic atmosphere that would go nicely on your photos.

Temples aren’t exactly a rare sight – even in a busy metropolis like Saigon – but there are a few temples around that are found in rather unusual locations. One of which is the famous Phù Châu Temple that floats on Vàm Thuật River and is only accessible by boats.

To get to Phù Châu Temple, you will need to travel from Gò Vấp Market through Nguyễn Thái Sơn Street, turn left at the end into Trần Báo Giao Street. A few hundred meters more and you’ll find a ferry service that will carry you to the temple for VND10,000/person (~0.42USD) – an affordable trip that offers an exciting time and photo opportunities for guests who are itching for short and sweet water adventures.

1. Cà phê vợt – taste this freshly brewed coffee filtered through a cloth net

Cà phê vợt

For the coffee connoisseurs, there’s nothing strange about Vietnam being a cultural coffee hotpot, where you can try out a variety of wonderful blends made with an endless number of methods, from traditional to modern.

Besides the iconic phin filter, there is also another brewing method called cà phê vợt – also known as nel drip coffee – that we think you should try.

Cà phê vợt_clay vesselsImage credit: Cheo Leo Cafe

Cà phê vợt is done by simmering the beans inside a clay or metal pot, then filtering the liquid through a fabric net, which is what gave the method its name. This brewing method was brought into Vietnam from China by the Hoa people, and then naturally developed into what we see today.

Said to have a very distinctive flavor, with a smooth and creamy texture and a hint of sweet aftertaste, this delicious coffee is worth a try and can only be found in some family businesses around Saigon.

If you want to try it out, we recommend checking Cheo Leo Cafe, an 80-year-old business that has become popular among many coffee lovers in Saigon. The coffee here is brewed inside real clay pots, so you’ll know that it’s a worthy, authentic place for a good cup of Joe. Do note that their sitting space is quite small, and can get crowded easily.

Price: VND18,000-VND28,000 (~USD0.76,~USD1.18)
Address: 109/36 Nguyễn Thiện Thuật Street, Ward 2, District 3, Hồ Chí Minh City

2. Chè – Munching on soothingly sweet soup on the street

Chè

Chè is one of the most unique desserts that you’ll find in Vietnam – a sweet and thick soup that is made from various ingredients such as beans, fruits, and jelly, combined into an almost endless world of flavor.

Enjoyed by both young and old, chè is a quintessential icon of Vietnamese snacks and shouldn’t be missed out on. Every province of Vietnam offers a distinctive variation on chè, and Saigon is no exception.

We suggest trying out your first chè experience at Chè Phục Linh, an old shop with more than 30 years of experience. This place offers an array of sweet ingredients for you to combine into your chè. If you want to escape the intense heat of Saigon, try out a cooling bowl of chè.

Price: VND10,000-VND20,000 (~USD0.42,~USD0.84)
Address: 200 Lê Quang Sung Street, Ward 6, District 6, Hồ Chí Minh City
Time: 9am-6.30pm, Daily

3. Gỏi khô bò – snacking on beef jerky and papaya salad inside a park

Things to do in Saigon_Gỏi khô bòbò

Besides chè, gỏi is also an essential part of Vietnamese cuisine – a kind of salad made from various healthy ingredients bound together with a dressing made from fish sauce.

Gỏi has become a common sight on many Vietnamese dining tables and it is eaten as an appetizer, side dish, or a simple snack for students during rush hour.

The Saigonese’s favorite has to be the tasty gỏi khô bò – made from shredded green papaya, beef jerky, and prawn crackers. This delightfully simple snack has been an all-time favorite among students.

There are a few old stalls that sell this dish around Saigon, but our favorite is the Dì Sáu’s gỏi khô bò stall located in Lê Văn Tám Park. This lady has been making this simple snack for more than half a century. Her reputation is known far and wide among the locals across 2 generations.

Order a box of gỏi here and eat it in the nearby park for a refreshing snacking experience.

Price: VND28,000 (~USD1.18)
Address: On the sidewalk in front of Lê Văn Tám Park, 259a Hai Bà Trưng Street, Ward 8, District 3, Hồ Chí Minh City
Time: 11 am-9pm, Daily

4. Cơm tấm – classic meat and rice with a comforting taste

Things to do in Saigon_Cơm tấm
Image credit: Gia Đình BB – Cơm Tấm BB

Potato chip brand O’Star recently released a cơm tấm-flavored chips and it’s no surprise that they did. The original dish is so good that it’s only logical to turn it into a chip flavor.

Cơm tấm – or simply, broken rice – is a combination of rice and a variety of meat such as grilled pork, egg meatloaf, and shredded pigskin, finished off with a side of fish sauce.

This simple yet utterly divine dish has become a mainstay of day-to-day Saigonese life. It can be found in every little corner of Saigon – be it as breakfast, lunch, or even dinner.

cơm tấm ba ghiền
Image credit: Cơm Tấm Ba Ghiền

Cơm Tấm Ba Ghiền is very popular among fans of this dish. Although their prices are a bit higher than the average stalls, the meat’s juiciness and delightful sauce are simply unmatched.

It can get crowded rather easily, so try to go there a bit early if you can.

Price: VND75,000-VND141,000 (~USD3.16,~USD5.94)
Address: 84 Đặng Văn Ngữ Street, Ward 10, Phú Nhuận District, Hồ Chí Minh City
Time: 7am-10pm, Daily

5. Bột chiên – crunchy and eggy goodness that leaves you wanting more

Another student’s and office worker’s long-time favorite is the bột chiên. It’s a known Chinese-influenced dish made from fried rice flour cake and egg, accompanied with refreshing vegetables and tangy soy sauce.

Eaten as either a quick snack or a full-blown meal, the crispy, chewy bột chiên is a contender for the most popular comfort food in Saigon.

We recommend trying out this delightful dish at Bột chiên Đạt Thành. We recommend the 2 eggs version instead of 1 egg for that extra-flavored punch.

Price: VND40,000-VND46,000 (~USD1.69,~USD1.94)
Address: 277 Võ Văn Tần Street, Ward 5, District 3, Hồ Chí Minh City
Time: 2pm-9pm, Daily

Explore Vietnam’s culture at Caman Village

The ancient town of Hội An is famous for its lovely antique buildings, pristine beaches, and great food culture. But after you’ve explored the town’s Old Quarter and had your fill of signature dishes such as Quảng noodles or cao lầu, Caman Village is a destination we recommend checking out.

Located on the outskirts of Hội An, this garden café/event venue offers a verdant space to relax at, and plenty of workshops to learn more about Vietnam’s culture. Let’s have a look:

A recreation of a Vietnam village

caman village gate

Past the rustic-looking gate with a thatched roof, you’ll find yourself in a spacious yard with gardens growing a wide variety of plants, from rosemary and thyme to mint and artichoke.

caman village houses

At the center of the yard is a roofed section that serves as the venue’s main space. Here, you’ll find long tables and rattan chairs to sit at, as well as a counter to order food and drinks.

Surrounding this main space are several cottages designed to resemble traditional Vietnamese country houses, equipped with old-school furniture. Some of these also come with their own unique décor. For example, one recreates a tailor’s shop, with a sewing machine, colorful fabrics, and other tailoring equipment.

Outside, a crystal clear pond covered in lotus leaves, and colorful flowers blooming next to stone paths between the gardens serve to complete the rustic picture.

A café and event venue with regular workshops

For spontaneous visitors, Caman Village runs a regular café with food and drinks featuring organic ingredients from their own gardens. The butterfly pea tea (VND40,000, ~USD1.70), for instance, comes cool and refreshing, with a pleasant aroma.

You can also find here processed tea leaves, artichoke syrup, and mứt – a Vietnamese snack made from dried fruits and plants, with prices ranging from VND100,000 (~USD4.26) to VND150,000 (~USD6.39). They make for nice gifts for family and friends at home.

Cooking workshop at Caman Village.

That said, we highly recommend contacting them ahead of your visit to arrange a workshop for VND250,000 (~USD10.64) per guest. There are several workshop options to choose from. You can learn to make Hội An’s signature cao lầu noodles, or try your hands at cooking bánh xèo – Vietnamese pancake with shrimp, meat, and bean sprout fillings.

The workshops also include a free tour of their gardens, where you’ll get to water the plants yourself.

Caman Village – a mini Vietnamese village with verdant gardens

Hội An offers no shortage of awesome cafes and hangout spots, but Caman Village is among the more unique ones we’ve seen. It offers a glimpse into the Vietnamese rural life, not only in its décor, but also in the many fun culture-centric activities visitors can experience here.

Address: 01 Nguyễn Thành Ý Street, Cẩm An Ward, Hội An
Opening hours: 8am-5pm, Daily
Contact: 0905 512 511 | CAMAN Village’s website

Cafes in Đà Nẵng with Christmas décor

Christmas is just around the corner, and while it isn’t an official holiday in Vietnam, that doesn’t dampen our festive spirit. You can see the Christmas theme everywhere around this time, be it on the streets, at schools, or at entertainment venues such as cafes and restaurants.

So if you’re looking for places to add a few Christmas-themed pictures to your gallery, here are 8 cafes in Đà Nẵng with Christmas décor you might want to check out.

1. Reply 1988 – a tribute to a popular Korean TV show

christmas cafe da nang - reply 1988 outside

Reply 1988 Café is an impressive 2-story space that pays tribute to the well-loved Korean TV series of the same name. It has always been a popular check-in spot thanks to its bright, crisp façade featuring a tall glass window and wooden benches surrounded by a wall of solemn brown bricks – all standing out against a beige backdrop.

Now, the signature window has taken on a more festive look as artificial mistletoes and Christmas balls line its frame. Cute little cedar pine trees in baskets lined up along the walls further add to the vibe.

Indoor, the Christmas décor is pretty simple – a Christmas tree here, some nutcrackers there, enough for you to feel the holiday spirit without it getting overwhelming.

A corner with a projected screen showing Christmas-themed images next to European-style decorative objects makes for another popular picture hotspot.

For drinks, we recommend getting the signature mango smoothie with milk foam (VND49,000, ~USD2.08) to go alongside the many pastry options such as the croissant with salted egg cream (VND35,000, ~USD1.48).

2. Amee Station – cafe with mountain views and snow-covered Christmas trees

christmas cafe da nang - amee station 1

Amee Station is another name that shutter-happy café-hoppers in Đà Nẵng are probably no strangers to. The café features several wooden cabins built on the side of a small mountain, offering the experience of drinking coffee amidst plenty of trees and plants.

amee station 2

Climb all the way to the top – about the equivalent of scaling a 5-story building, so you might want to wear comfortable shoes – and you can enjoy a rooftop view of Đà Nẵng and the ocean in the distance.

amee station 3

For Christmas, Amee Station has equipped its space with, unsurprisingly, many Christmas trees. One particular corner features several trees in a line, all covered in a thick layer of artificial snow. With the right angle, you can produce shots to look as if you’re actually in a winter pine forest.

amee station drinks

As the main draw here is the view, drinks are pretty standard. Feel free to grab any coffee (from VND35,000, ~USD1.48), fruit teas (from VND50,000, ~USD2.12), or smoothies (VND55,000, ~USD2.33) that tickle your fancy.

3. MOMO Coffee & Tea – cafe resembling a train station, with artificial snow

christmas cafe da nang - momo station 1
Image credit: MOMO Coffee & Tea

A relatively new kid on the block, MOMO Coffee & Tea has been somewhat of a sensation since its opening just a couple of months ago. Its unique designs resemble a Korean train cabin – completed with signs bearing Korean characters, grab handles, and glass windows looking out to one of Đà Nẵng’s busiest streets.

momo station indoor

Though the space here is relatively small, you will find no shortage of opportunities to snap Christmas-themed pictures. A Christmas tree and plenty of artificial snow have been set up at the “train door” next to Bearbrick statues, providing an ideal backdrop.

The décor is not static either. There are machines spraying artificial snow for you to further spice up your Christmas album.

The menu here boasts a plethora of options for milk tea from only VND25,000 (~USD1.06). We enjoy the chocolate milk tea with cheese topping – which comes with a lot of toppings and an actually moderate amount of sweetness.

If you’ve been following The Smart Local Vietnam, you know Trình Cà Phê is one of our go-to spots in Đà Nẵng to relax amidst a lush garden and rustic traditional Vietnamese houses. But this popular café franchise has recently opened a new outlet with a more modern look, which goes well with Christmas décor.

From now until the end of the year, the café is offering several drink-and-cake sets at discounted prices. For example, you can get a bạc sỉu – Vietnamese coffee with extra milk – and tiramisu combo for VND60,000 (~USD2.54) instead of the regular VND75,000 (~USD3.18).

Next to the café’s signature brown bear mascot, you’ll find a fireplace model with mock Christmas trees, reindeer statues, and ornamental snowflakes dangling from the ceiling. Mistletoe framing nearby doors and windows complements the whole corner.

And of course, it’s always a good idea to grab a hot drink on a cold December day. Something like the aromatic, warmly sweet matcha latte (VND39,000, ~USD1.65), perhaps.

For drinks, we recommend the coffee with salted caramel cream (VND50,000, ~USD2.12), which rounds up the taste of coffee with some nice salty sweetness.

The spacious grass-covered yard of Dream House Coffee, with bougainvillea trees and a stone path leading up to a lovely cabin that serves as the café’s indoor space, is a sought-after picture spot by itself.

Add a Christmas tree, gift boxes, and some LED lights into the picture, and you’d be hard-pressed to find a better place for Christmas pictures. Do note that the café doesn’t accept guests under 12 years old, so families with kids might want to consider other options.

NEO- Cafe in Saigon – a hidden art cafe with a contemporary retro feel

Inside an alleyway that passers-by wouldn’t typically see, NEO- is a stylish establishment where you can go for a weekend hangout with friends, accompanied by saucy grub and a fancy-looking drinks menu.

If you’re interested in taking pictures with a colorful backdrop, or just want a fun environment to enjoy your drinks, this cafe might be for you.

NEO-_alley

Located inside an alley on Hai Bà Trưng Street, NEO- is easily recognizable by its bright entrance. Going up the stairs and into the cafe, you’ll find an explosion of colors welcoming you inside. This stylish space feels more like a modern art museum, with many angles for some gorgeous photos.

NEO-_interior

From smooth-looking plastic chairs that come in primary colors to abstract paintings that brighten up the space, Neo-’s carefully curated choice of color-blocked decor has turned the cafe into a chic-looking space that is perfect for photo-taking.

If you’re looking for fresh air, the balcony is accessible to all and offers a great view of the surrounding roofs. We recommend going up there during the late afternoon for a fantastic view of the sunset. It’s also around this time that NEO- offers some great craft beers to enjoy.

NEO-_BalconyThe upstairs balcony is often the place for beer during the evening.

Share some nachos and drinks with friends

NEO-_menu

Being both a cafe and a bar space, NEO- offers some tasty bar bites that is perfect for sharing, such as fries, nachos, and sausages.

NEO-_NachosA crunchy Nachos Chợ Lớn to share.

We highly recommend the Nachos Chợ Lớn (VND99,999, ~USD4.24) – a simple dish of fried nachos with juicy, aromatic bits of ground meat, onions, and tomatoes, great as a dish to share with friends, and even better when paired with their craft beer.

While we didn’t have the chance to try out their beer, the cafe concocts tasty non-alcoholic options if you want to enjoy your hangout sober, featuring some very tropical tastes.

NEO-_Sữa HuếSữa Huế, a non-alcoholic drink with tropical flavors.

A refreshing, yet full-bodied drink that we recommend is the Sữa Huế (VND39,000, ~USD1.65), a flavorful concoction made from yogurt, condensed milk, and lime juice that leaves a fantastic sour note.
