Dream World Bangkok, Thailand

It’s the holiday season, and many have set their sights on conquering the new theme park additions during their trips abroad. You’ve got the new Donkey Kong Country over at USJ, while the fan favourite Hong Kong Disneyland just got a Frozen-themed upgrade last year.

But, if you’ve decided to give the crowds a miss at these tourist magnets and would still like to partake in the thrills, consider jetting over to Thailand for a lesser-known attraction – Dream World Bangkok. From its adrenaline-pumping rides to a sub-zero snow town, here’s all you need to know before you head down to the Land of Smiles to have a go at it:

What is Dream World Bangkok?

Dream World Bangkok entranceImage credit: Dream World Bangkok

Dream World Bangkok is an amusement park located in the Thanyaburi District of the Pathum Thani Province, which is about an hour’s drive from Bangkok’s city centre. Opened in 1993, it’s by no means the newest theme park the country has to offer, but it’s still packed with almost 30 different attractions for the whole family to have a blast at.

It is recommended that you book your tickets to Dream World Bangkok online to skip the queues at its physical ticket counters, and you can purchase them at various booking platforms such as Trip.com. Admission starts from S$28.54 for a Dream World Super Visa, which gives visitors access to all areas of the park and unlimited rides on most of its attractions.

For a small fee, you can also bundle your Super Visa with a buffet lunch.

As for food, dining options within the park include a KFC restaurant for fast food; a Thai speciality restaurant that whips up tasty tom yum noodles and pad thai; and a food court that serves cuisine from all over the world. There are also several snack stands stationed around the park that sell finger food such as corndogs and popcorn.

Try your hand at almost 30 attractions across 4 zones

Sky Coaster rideImage credit: Dream World Bangkok

There are a total of 29 attractions to hit up when you’ve arrived at Dream World Bangkok, so you’ll want to dedicate an entire day if you’d like to completely explore the park. Do slather on some sunscreen or bust open an umbrella, as the park’s known to get pretty dang hot when the sun’s out, but at least they’ve got a few water-related rides to cool down at.

Here are some of the rides that you can look forward to, whether you’re an adrenaline junkie on the prowl for their next fix, or just looking for some wholesome family fun for the little ones.

Heart-thumping rides for thrill seekers such as the Sky Coaster & Tornado

Dream World Bangkok has its fair share of scream-inducing rides if you want to kick your heart’s BPM up a notch; one that thrill seekers cannot miss is their infamous Tornado.

TornadoImage credit: Dream World Bangkok

After you’ve secured yourself onto your seats, the ride’s yellow arm begins oscillating slowly, like a menacing Grandfather clock. It then starts to pick up speed, and before you know it you’re 7 storeys in the air, swaying at speeds of up to 75km/h. By the way, the ring that your seats are attached to also revolves 360°, so don’t go on this one if you’ve had a heavy meal beforehand.

Sky CoasterImage credit: Dream World Bangkok

Should the Tornado not suffice, then hop on the Sky Coaster. Much like USS’ Battlestar Galactica, this roller coaster does away with the carts so riders will be left suspended in their seats, as they navigate the bobs and weaves of the track with their legs dangling helplessly.

Hurricane

Another ride that you might have reservations strapping in for is the Hurricane. This one’s basically an oversized swing that takes riders 20m aloft, before making a complete turn. The seats are also capable of doing somersaults too, so just like the Tornado, think twice before boarding this ride on a full stomach.

Super Splash & Grand CanyonImage adapted from: Dream World Bangkok

To cool off, look no further than the Super Splash and Grand Canyon rides. The former is a slow ascend up a long ramp which culminates in a giant splash down into a shimmering pool of water, while the latter is a bumpy raft ride in turbulent river rapids.

Thankfully, raincoats are provided on these rides, but no there’s no guarantee you’ll leave dry, so do pack a change of clothes just in case.

Kid-friendly rides for the entire family

If the children aren’t too keen on these gravity-defying rides, Dream World Bangkok has a slew of kid-friendly ones that will be right up their alley.

Speedy Mouse
Image adapted from: Dream World Bangkok

For starters, the Speedy Mouse roller coaster is just the thing for those who’re just breaking into the world of high-octane rides. It’s not terribly fast, but its gentle twists and turns should be enough to elicit a joyful squeal or two.

Monza

When the kiddos want a taste of what it feels like to get behind the wheel, take a ride on the Monza. Don’t worry, they won’t have any accidents on these roads, as the cars will chug along the track at a moderate pace. When they’d like to play passenger princess instead, they can jump on the Sightseeing Train which goes around the park, so they can take in the sights.

Indian Boat & Bicycle BoatsImage adapted from: Dream World Bangkok

An adorable ride that the water-loving kids will enjoy is the Indian Boat. They’ll get to control their own vessels, as they tame the tides with their trusty paddle in hand. If that doesn’t satisfy your aspiring captain, then get them on one of the pedal-operated Bicycle Boats in the park’s lake.

Other themed areas such as a Snow Town & live shows to catch

If you’ve got the time and energy to spare after going on the many rides at Dream World Bangkok, they’ve still got a couple of themed areas to visit.

Animal Farm

These include the Animal Farm, and just like its name suggests, it’s a mini zoo where visitors get to view and even interact with some of its furry and feathered inhabitants. You won’t find the likes of Moo Deng here, but rabbits, ducks, goats, and pigs will be sauntering about for you to pet. If you’re lucky, you can get up close with parrots as they perch on your hand to feed.

Snow Town - Dream World BangkokImage adapted from: @dreamworldth via Instagram

Don’t forget to swing by the Snow Town too. It’s an indoor winter wonderland that is kept at sub-zero temperatures, so you’ll want to don the coats provided to stay warm. Here, there are carved-out slopes to go sleighing, as well as other cool installations such as a towering wooly mammoth replica, polar bear sculptures, and igloos to duck into.

Water Fun - Dream World Bangkok

When the weather’s getting unbearably hot, there’s the Water Fun water park within the park for the tots to wade about in. It’s packed with tons of water spouts and slides for a splashing good time, along with a gigantic pail which gradually fills up and eventually rains down bucketfuls of water for a refreshing surprise.

There’ll also be various live performances happening throughout the park at certain timings, so you might want to keep an eye out for them.

Hollywood Action Show - Dream World Bangkok

At 12.30pm, 2.30pm, and 4.30pm on weekends and 2.30pm on weekdays, the Hollywood Action Show will be taking place right opposite the Tornado ride. Professional stunt actors will take centre stage and perform death-defying stunts, accompanied by pyrotechnics reminiscent of a Michael Bay film.

Colours of the World Parade - Dream World Bangkok

Meanwhile, the Colours of the World Parade is scheduled at 3.45pm on weekends, where an array of characters donning vibrant costumes will be making their rounds about the park’s lake. The parade will feature performers from different countries dressed in traditional outfits from all over the world, as they strut their stuff while busting out swanky dance moves.

Plan a visit to Dream World Bangkok the next time you’re in Thailand

Dream World Bangkok globeCould this familiar-looking globe be a cheeky nod to Universal Studios’?

Although Dream World Bangkok is not as well-known as the heavy hitters like Universal Studios and Disneyland, it still warrants a visit when you’re touring Bangkok as it has something for visitors of all ages.

Other than those we’ve mentioned, the park also has attractions such as a haunted house, cable cars, and a 4D theatre. We’d be here all day if we were to give each of them a shout, so it’s better if you head down to experience the thrills for yourself.

Day trips from Bangkok

Whenever there’s a long weekend, Bangkok is often the choice destination for most Singaporeans. It’s a short trip away, and with various floating markets and bazaars in nearby districts like Chatuchak and Sam Phran, shopping is virtually guilt-less.

But these areas have become way too common among tourists. For your next BKK jaunt, switch up your itinerary and venture out to the following 10 less low-key locations. They’re no more than 3 hours away from Central Bangkok, perfect for quick day trips throughout your visit.

The current exchange rate is ฿10 = S$0.38 as of 9th September 2024.

What transportation services should I use for Bangkok day trips?

To get the most out of the trip, you can rent a car to shorten the travel time. Rates for a day trip start from S$25.46/day on Klook. You can also use ride hailing services like Grab, Line Man, Bolt, or Gojek. Just ensure that you book the ride an hour or two in advance as not all drivers will readily go the extra mile for you. Local cabs are also an option, but be prepared to face the risk of suspiciously high fares.

Otherwise, you can start your journey via bus or train from terminals in Bangkok, like Mo Chit Bus Terminal, Hua Lamphong Station, or Thonburi Station. If time is on your side, you can travel to these places via scenic Bangkok train trips.

What payment methods do these places in Thailand accept?

Although not as mainstream as Bangkok, these places are still tourist attractions, so they do accept credit or debit card payments. But if it’s a street food vendor or small ware, it’s likely they only accept cash. Otherwise, you can always go to an ATM to withdraw some cash quickly.

Since 2021, Singaporeans can use PayNow to transfer money to PromptPay users, Thailand’s version of PayNow. This covers users from DBS, OCBC, and UOB banks. DBS users also have the option of using PayLah! at over 8 million shops. Find out more about which banks and brands are involved on DBS website.

What is the dress code at religious sites?

For the religious sites listed here, there’s a strict dress code to follow. Like any other place of worship, avoid going in shorts, t-shirts, or revealing clothes. Bring along a cloth or garb to cover up your shoulders and knees.

Hua Hin Train Caves, theme parks, markets, and royal train stations

Caves, theme parks, markets & royal train stations

Bangkok Day Trips - Pala-U waterfall & Phraya Nakhon cave shrine Image adapted from: @claire_lemer, @inspiringdom via Instagram

A destination that Bangkok citizens themselves escape to over the weekend, Hua Hin is a great BKK alternative. If you’re after a challenge, Pala-U Waterfall will be a great spot to visit. It has about 15 levels, but beginners can just keep to the first 3 where you can take a dip in mini pools. Venture in further and you’ll reach Phraya Nakhon Cave. It houses a hidden golden monument that looks most beautiful under sunlight.

Sometimes, you just want to detach yourself from the hustle and bustle of the city so much that you wish you were transported back to the ancient times. Well, Ayutthaya Historical Park is as close as you can get to that wish, as it’s known for its beautiful ancient ruins with deep lore. It’s also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so you know that everything you see there has been properly preserved.

Wat Phra Si Sanphet

Check out Wat Phra Si Sanphet, distinguished by its 3 stupas. Each stupa was actually colored in gold, as it was built as mausoleums for the 3 kings of Ayyuthaya, until the Burmese-Siamese war in 1767 left it in ruins. Legend has it that the people of that era were giants, hence the large design, but we’d leave that up to your interpretation.

10. Asiatique The Riverfront

Large open-air mall with a Ferris wheel

Asiatique the riverfront

Asiatique Riverfront follows an open-air mall concept and features plenty of entertainment, ranging from rides to shows and multiple stores. Interestingly, most of these stores are mostly housed in former warehouses. In fact, exploring these 1,500 shops and 40 restaurants is bound to make you reach your step count goal of the day.

One of the most exciting features has got to be “Asiatique Sky”, Thailand’s largest Ferris wheel with a height of 60m. Plop onto this humongous ferris wheel and cure your height-phobic friends’ fears. They’ll thank you for it, I’m sure.

Once you’ve successfully pissed off your height-phobic friends, grab your scaredy cat friends and brave this mall’s very own haunted house, Mystery Mansion. Assure them that if they’ve survived Singapore’s PSLE results, they can surely survive Mystery Mansion. Or not.

Once you’ve screamed your lungs out, head on over to the carousel where you can relax and take aesthetic pictures pretending you didn’t almost soil your pants 2 minutes ago.

Possibly the most exciting feature of this open-air mall is the Calypso Cabaret show. Covering a whopping 16 acts, performers entertain the audience by lip syncing and dancing to classics from every genre. Witness acts, like Marilyn Monroe impersonators, and immerse yourself fully into this fun atmosphere of classy entertainment.

Full Moon Party at Koh Phangan, Thailand

Those who are hearing about a Full Moon Party for the first time might think they have something to do with the supernatural – a gathering of werewolves or cackling witches brewing something sinister perhaps. Actually, you’re not far off – there’s definitely some “brewing” of alcoholic drinks happening.

It’s one of Thailand’s most notorious beach parties where you’ll find lots of fire dancers, bucket cocktails, and glow-in-the-dark body paint. Here’s all you need to know about this “rave” that draws in travellers to Koh Phangan, Thailand.

The current exchange rate is ฿10 = ~S$0.37 as of 13th July 2024.

– What is a Full Moon Party? –

full moon party fireImage credit: Full Moon Party Koh Phangan

Most great legends have humble beginnings. Apparently, that’s the case for massive beach festivals in Thailand as well. Back in the 80s, a group of backpackers decided to have a small party on Haad Rin Beach in Koh Phangan. Maybe they were inspired by the 70s hit, Dancing in the Moonlight, since they did exactly that – drank and danced under the light of a full moon.

The partying usually starts as early as 5 days before the full moon for those who want to warm up for the main event – the actual Full Moon Party will last the whole night of the full moon till sunrise the next morning. There’s no rhyme or reason why the partying is done around this lunar period, except that the tradition happened to begin as such.

Singaporeans who’ve gone to a Siloso Beach party –  y’all ain’t seen nothin’ yet. Koh Phangan’s Full Moon Parties are rowdier than the parties we have in Singapore. For example, the alcoholic drinks you find here are a concoction of spirits like vodka or rum and energy drinks that are served in buckets. They’re pretty strong from what we’ve heard, so just be careful not to toh.

The likelihood of you literally bumping into strangers is also pretty high, considering how packed these parties can get. Don’t worry though, you’ll be able to see if someone’s getting too close for comfort – since everyone’s either wearing neon colours or has body paint that glows in the dark.

As for the price, the entrance fee starts from ฿200 for the official dates, which will help fund the clean up after the parties.

– Where are Full Moon Parties held? –

The Full Moon Party isn’t resigned to just one spot, the 1km-long Haad Rin Beach is basically one giant party. Most of the bars and some resorts along the beach will have their own mini-parties as well, with fun activities like jumping flaming ropes or fire dance performances.

If you’re wondering where to head to, read on for some of the spots along Haad Rin Beach you can visit. These places offer varying levels of intensity, just in case newcomers are not prepared for it to be that havoc.

1. Paradise Bungalows

Where the OG Full Moon Party started

Walk by Paradise Bungalows and you might spot a stone feature bearing the words “The Original” carved onto it. This is said to be the place where that group of backpackers first started partying under the full moon back. That said, they do have a reputation to uphold, so things do get wild here.

Signature to their part in the Full Moon Parties are their fire performances, where even partygoers can participate in safer ones like fire limbo and fire jump rope. If you’re down to beat the heat – this is the place to be.

Pre-game your Full Moon Party at Coral Bungalows, which throws pool parties a day before the full moon. Although considerably mellower than the full moon ragers, the action is no less intense with their in-house DJs that’ll blast music all day, all night to keep you grooving.

You’re right by the beach if you stay at Coral Bungalows, but if you want to explore the rest of Koh Phangan, rent a motorcycle from them at just ฿250/day. You can also book day trips with activities like snorkelling from ฿1,500/person.

For some regular drinking games, drop by Drop In Bar. This side is more chill with their hip-hop playlist but expect the same boisterous energy from partygoers here. If the crowd gets too much, escape to the upper deck which is usually less of a squeeze. You’ll still get a good view of the party without missing any action.

– When are Full Moon Parties held? –

As its name suggests, the parties are held during the full moon – which usually happens once or twice a month.

As Singaporeans, we’re usually ridiculed for our level of kiasu-ness. However, planning your trip for a full moon party in 2025 now might not be such a bad idea. Accommodation in Koh Phangan gets booked out in advance. As of July 2024, most of the top hotels and resorts are already fully booked till December during the dates of the parties.

Also, you might want to check if any of the Buddhist holidays in Thailand coincide with the dates of the party you’re looking at. On 5 festival dates – Makha Bucha, Visakha Bucha, Asarnha Bucha Day, and the start and end of Buddhist Lent – the entire country goes on an alcohol lockdown. Full Moon Parties are then postponed to another day, depending on the festival.

Also, as these celebrations follow the lunar calendar, their dates change every year – something to take into account if you’re planning your trip.

Here are the dates for Full Moon Parties in 2024 and 2025:

  • 22nd July 2024
  • 19th August 2024
  • 17th September 2024
  • 18th October 2024
  • 15th November 2024
  • 15th December 2024
  • 25th January 2025
  • 25th February 2025
  • 24th March 2025
  • 23rd April 2025
  • 23rd May 2025
  • 21st June 2025
  • 21st July 2025

– Best accommodation close to the party –

The next step to planning a great Full Moon Party trip is booking your accommodation. Whether you’re a broke bish or putting your Assurance Package vouchers to good use, getting a place that’s as close to the beach as possible is a plus. After a whole night of partying and dancing, you’ll appreciate being a short 5-minute walk to a nice comfy bed.

Hostels

full moon party - HostelsImage credit: Phaganist Hostel

Staying at a hostel is the best option for backpackers and those travelling on a budget. Places like So Good Haad Rin Hostel, Dancing Elephant Beach Club, Phanganist Hostel, and Echo Beach Hostel are affordable options to rest at before and after the party. You can get yourself a bed at one of these hostels from onwards of S$19/night but be warned – they disappear fast.

Because it’s a hostel, you’ll have to share the room with some unfamiliar faces. The upside is that they’re most likely there for the same reason you are, so it’s time to make new partying kakis.

Mid-range resorts & bungalows

For non-backpackers or those who prefer privacy, the most popular option is a mid-range resort or bungalow that offers private rooms. The prices for rooms at places like House of Sanskara, Palita Lodge, Neptune’s Villa, and Aquavana Haad Rin Resort range from S$100-S$200/night, which isn’t too expensive if you’re sharing with friends.

High-end resorts

Since you’re on a scenic island like Koh Phangan, you might want to treat yourself to a few nights at a high-end resort. Resorts like Skymoon Resort, Vannee Golden Sands, and Mr Black Resort will cost approximately S$200-S$300/night.

Most of them are also slightly further away from the beach, about a 10-minute walk back. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Being further away means less noise, especially if you’re planning to skip the after-party for a good night’s rest.

– How to get to Koh Phangan’s full Moon Parties? –

Once you’ve picked out a good place to stay, the next thing to check out is the flight to Koh Samui, the nearest hub to Koh Phangan. There are direct flights from Singapore to Koh Samui via AirAsia, BangkokAir, Scoot, or Jetstar at around S$400. Prices may vary, especially during peak seasons like June and December – maybe book the flight on a Wednesday if you want a cheaper flight.

From there, you’ll have to take a speed boat from one of the ports on Koh Samui. Speedboats only take you 30 minutes to get to Koh Phangan and are pretty cheap, starting from ฿876. Some companies also do direct ferry transfers, which include pick-up via car from your hotel in Koh Samui.

Book a ferry transfer from Koh Samui to Koh Phangan.

As for the Full Moon Party, the most crowded parties will take place in December and January. It gets especially crowded during the “Full Moon Party” on 31st December, where many partygoers travel here to usher in the new year in style. If you’re planning to do the same, expect crowds of up to 30,000 people.

– Pro tips for Singaporeans going –

full moon party 2024Image credit: @bradc1977 via Instagram

Friends and colleagues who have gone for a Full Moon Party have returned claiming to have “survived”, rather than enjoy it. This means first-timers should heed these tips for peace of mind to make it out of the party unscathed.

1. Pick a meet-up spot

If you’re partying with your friends, pick a landmark to meet up at in case anyone gets lost. This ensures that everyone knows where to go, since the crowds at these parties are no joke.

full moon party - easy to spot moon sculptureEasy-to-spot landmarks like this moon sculpture are good places to set as meetup points.

Yes, you could just call them on the phone. But petty thefts at these parties happen often or you might lose your phone. The sheer size of the crowd may also cause signal interference, so it could be hard to get a hold of anyone via a phone call.

2. Stay away from the coast

full moon party - koh pangan shoreline coastThe shoreline is normal during a normal day – but during full moon parties, it turns into a toilet in nature.

The partygoers at the Full Moon Party take the phrase “the world is your oyster” a bit too seriously when they use the ocean as their toilet. As tempting as it may be to go for a dip, since it gets quite hot even at night, it’s probably for the best not to.

You’ll be wading in pee for one, but also, tides tend to be higher during a full moon, which could be dangerous to wade in, even for strong swimmers.

3. Don’t push yourself too hard, schedule some breaks in

full moon party - sleep areasSleep is for the weak. Or for the really, really drunk.
Image credit: She cooks & travels via Facebook

There are free sleeping areas for those who need a breather or have had too much to drink. This is a safe space to re-energise before heading back out into the chaos, but they are often crowded, so you’re not promised a spot.

An alternative would be to head to Ban Tai Street, located behind the bars and resorts. This street has several food outlets where you can recharge with food during the night.

4. Plan 6 months to a year ahead

Changi Airport

Trust us, booking a hotel in Koh Phangan during the Full Moon Party can be as competitive as getting a Coldplay concert ticket in Singapore. The best accommodations for the Full Moon Party dates this year are already long gone. So, start planning now if you want to get a good hostel or hotel room for the parties in 2024 and 2025 without paying ridiculous prices.

5. Buy glow-in-the-dark paint before going

Besides Halloween, the Full Moon Party is a rare chance for you to go crazy with some wacky designs using glow-in-the-dark body paint. The common theme of the Full Moon Parties is being fluorescent at night – be it through clothes, accessories, or some sick “tattoos”.

full moon party - neon glow in the dark tattoosImage credit: @benjawan_ploydee via Instagram

You can buy glow-in-the-dark accessories like masks and clothes there, but you’ll be paying tourist prices – anywhere from ฿500. Get creative and make your own designs – it’s not a bad idea to buy your accessories in Singapore, too. Try getting fluorescent body paint from Shopee for S$5 for a set of 8 colours, or S$28 for a set of 12 colours on Shopee.

Other things to note about Full Moon Parties in Thailand

While you’re there to let your hair down and have some fun, here are some things to take note of so your vacay won’t be ruined.

Be wary of cannabis-infused food, drinks or even desserts on the menus, since it’s commonplace there but still illegal for Singaporeans to consume overseas.

There isn’t any dress code per se, but to match the festive vibe, go for brightly coloured neon outfits and accessories. Swimwear isn’t a must, but it’d be easier to wear them under your clothes if you plan to take a dip in the pool or the ocean to cool off from partying too hard.

Also, if you find your spidey sense tingling at any moment, don’t hesitate to dial the Thai Tourist Police Call Center at #1155. They’re open 24/7 so even if you’re wasted at 3am, you can contact them. The response team speaks English, so you won’t have to worry about any language barriers.

Start planning for the Full Moon Party in Koh Phangan

There you have it, your guide to the famous Full Moon Party in Koh Phangan. While there are smaller parties at places like Phuket’s Paradise Beach, we’d recommend going for the full authentic experience on Haad Rin Beach in Koh Phangan.

After all, it has to be on so many people’s bucket lists for a reason. Now get your party gang together and plan for a trip to Thailand.

Bangkok is well known for its shopping malls and markets, but there are times when you need a second look to discern if that LV bag is the real deal. Regional law firm Tilleke & Gibbins started the Museum of Counterfeit Goods to raise awareness about this issue of intellectual property theft and the harmful labour practices that come with it.

Their collection consists of over 4,000 products that breach or mimic popular trademarks, from your Pumes (Puma) to Eddie Hardy (Ed Hardy). Though it’s free to enter, you have to book a visit at least 5 days in advance.

When you think of temples, you think of peace and meditation, not carnivorous reptiles for sure. However, when you go to pray at Wat Chakrawat, you’ll be greeted by 3 crocodiles, peacefully relaxing beside the Buddha statues.

The crocodiles there aren’t running amok or performing in any shows – they are simply residents of the temple and are cared for by the monks. If they’re not basking where you can see them, there’s still the beautiful Buddhist architecture of the temple to check out.

State Railway of Thailand Special Express No.9

It’s no secret that Bangkok has Singaporeans in a chokehold as far as quick South East Asian getaways go. You can’t really blame us; it is but a 2.5-hour flight away, and is simply brimming with so many things to do that we’ve had trouble cramming all its offerings in our Bangkok guide.

But, if you’ve got time to spare and would like to uncover the rest of Thailand’s charm beyond the capital, then consider planning for a ride on the State Railway of Thailand’s Special Express No. 9 train. It’s an overnight sleeper train that’s one of the many train routes in Bangkok that gets you to Chiang Mai. Here’s how you can land yourself a first-class cabin for under S$100.

What are sleeper trains in Bangkok?

Train At The Station

The State Railway of Thailand operates all of the country’s national rail lines; their rail network serves 47 provinces all over Thailand, and approximately 35 million passengers annually. They also operate sleeper trains, which are trains that chug across the country overnight, and serve as a popular mode of transport for both tourists and locals alike.

All of these long-distance sleeper trains depart from the Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal Station in Bangkok, and they all serve different routes. For instance, trains No. 9 and 10 go from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, while trains No. 37 and 38 take travellers all the way from Bangkok to Su-ngai Kolok on the Malaysia-Thailand border.

How can I book a Bangkok sleeper train?

You can book seats on these sleeper trains online via the State Railway of Thailand’s website. The website’s pretty straightforward to navigate once you translate the site to English via the language toggle in the top-right.

The State Railway Of Thailand WebsiteImage adapted from: The State Railway of Thailand

After creating an account, key in “Krung Thep Aphiwat” in the “Origin” search box and your desired destination. Then, select your dates and number of passengers, and click search. You’ll be brought to a search results page listing the train services that serve that route, along with their ticket prices.

After making the payment online, your tickets will be emailed to you and you can print them out at home before your trip. You’ll be able to book your tickets up to 180 days in advance, and we recommend booking your seats way ahead of time.

Popular sleeper trains like train No. 9 will have their first class seats sold out within minutes, so do snag your tickets early to avoid disappointment.

What kinds of seats are available on sleeper trains in Bangkok?

There are 2 classes of carriages available on the State Railway of Thailand’s sleeper trains, namely the first-class and second-class carriages. The first class carriages (from ฿1,253, ~S$46.18/pax) consist of 12 enclosed cabins, and they each contain 2 seats. The second-class carriages house 40 seats each, and cost about ฿631 (~S$23.26)/pax.

These carriages are air-conditioned, with the exception of certain second-class carriages which are fan-cooled instead. The seats on both carriages can be converted into beds when it’s time to turn in for the night, with 1 passenger taking the upper berth and another taking the lower berth.

What can you expect on the Special Express first-class sleeper train?

Map Of JourneyThe 12.5-hour long sleeper train journey from Bangkok to Chiang Mai.

Today, we’re shining the spotlight on the State Railway of Thailand’s Special Express No.9 sleeper train. The one-way, 643km long journey will take passengers from Bangkok’s Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal Station to Chiang Mai railway station in roughly 12.5 hours, so lounging in their first-class cabins will make the ride much more enjoyable.

The seats in these cabins will set you back just ฿1,446 (~S$53.29) for those on the upper berth, while ones on the lower berth cost ฿1,646 (~S$60.67). If you’re travelling solo and not too keen on bunking in with an unfamiliar roomie, then opt to book the whole cabin for yourself for ฿2,446, which comes out to ~S$90.15.

The train is scheduled to leave the station at 6.40pm daily, and feel free to dabao some snacks at the station, as you’re allowed to munch on them throughout your journey. Favourites from the nearby food court include hamburgers, satay, bubble tea, and locally-grown fruits like mangoes.

After stocking up, make your way to your cabins promptly as boarding begins 30 minutes before departure.

First-Class Cabin On Bangkok Sleeper Train
Don’t worry, the cabins of this Bangkok sleeper train are fitted with power sockets for when your phones run out of juice during your obligatory Netflix binges.

Your cabins are stocked with fresh sheets and blankets to tide you through your night, plus towels and soap for you to use at the communal toilets and shower rooms down the corridor. Also, adjacent cabins are connected to one another via an interconnecting door, which is great for groups travelling in groups of 3 or 4 to have a mini slumber party within their quarters.

Of course, take the chance to gaze out of your cabin’s window during sunset and sunrise; you won’t be doing much sightseeing over the pitch-black cover of night anyway. Once you’ve gotten your IG-worthy snaps of the sunset at Bangkok’s outskirts, the staff will make their rounds at 8pm to assist passengers with setting up their beds.

Throughout the night, the train will make a total of 17 stops at stations like Don Mueang and Ayutthaya rail station, but only for a few minutes for new passengers to get on.

As for filling your rumbling stomach, you can head to the train’s restaurant carriage to pick up breakfast and dinner, or snacks in between. You can buy and consume your food right there, or have it delivered to you to eat in the privacy of your cabin by ordering through the LCD screen in your cabin.

They’re open from 5.30am to 10pm daily, and have quite the plethora of set meals to whet your appetite. These include rice sets (฿190, ~S$7.01)  that’s paired with dishes like red curry, roasted duck, and garlic chicken. For something light, much on spring rolls (฿150, ~S$5.54) and french fries (฿150, ~S$5.54), or slurp on a hearty bowl of fish soup with pork (฿150, ~S$5.54).

The train will arrive at the Chiang Mai railway station in the Wat Ket district at around 7.15am, which is perfect for capturing the sun rising over the neighbourhood’s many temples. After alighting, you’re well-poised to spend the rest of your daylight exploring the New City, so hail a tuktuk, and off you go.

Book a trip on the Special Express No.9 train

If you’re not in a rush, hopping on a train like the Special Express No.9 is a great way to traverse across the vast country of Thailand. It’s eco-friendly, plus you get to experience travel across provinces as the locals do in an affordable manner.

For things to do once you’ve arrived in Thailand, here are some Chiang Mai cafes and restaurants to refuel at after your long trip. Those looking to catch some sun can keep these beach clubs in Phuket in mind, but if you can’t bear to leave the capital, then consider these new things to do in Bangkok.

Si Yaek Huatakhe Cafe & Guesthouse – cat boat tour in BKK

When you think of canal boating, you’ll likely think of Venetian gondolas with your lover and a striped shirt gondolier sailing you along. But at Si Yaek Huatakhe Cafe & Guesthouse in Bangkok, your sailor will be a cat leading you to cafes and markets along the canal.

This quaint wooden inn on the capital city’s outskirts has cat boat rides, affordable Thai food, and best of all, a serene atmosphere for you to escape from the hustle and bustle of the regular things to do in Bangkok.

Go on a cat boat ride through a canal

Si Yaek Huatakhe Cafe & Guesthouse is stilted on Khong Prawet Buri Rom, a canal in the east of Bangkok. Unlike the malls and hotels you’re used to seeing in the city, the area has more of a kampung vibe.

Lovingly called Bangkok Cat Boat Coffee, the main allure of this establishment is boat rides on the canal accompanied by feline friends. The cat boat rides happen twice a day in the evenings and cost ฿100/person (~S$3.67). Each boat holds up to 2 passengers and a sailor.

Si Yaek Huatakhe Cafe Guesthouse - person on cat boat rideImage credit: @baiyichen._ via Instagram

The canal sailing started as a project to give incentives for cleaning up the canal. This has led to an astounding success as with the cafe’s popularity over the years, the canal has been clean of most trash and scum.

Now, both tourists and locals can just watch the sunset and relax while you’re on the boat and pet the furry cats.

Guest rooms from S$18.42 with in-house eatery

Si Yaek Huatakhe Cafe Guesthouse - roomImage credit: Si Yaek Huatakhe Cafe & Guesthouse via Facebook

Though you don’t have to stay at the guesthouse to sail with the cats, being a guest does have its perks. It’s just 30 minutes away from Suvarnabhumi Airport and rates start at just ฿500 (~S$18.42) for 2 pax, which makes it a great idea for a long weekend.

Since the building is over 100 years old, the rooms aren’t at 5-star levels. However, you still have all you need such as an ensuite bathroom, a microwave and a mini-fridge, for a comfortable stay. The wooden flooring and walls add a cosy ambience as well as the simplistic furniture.

You don’t have to go far for sustenance, the cafe has some cheap eats too. Their menu is quite extensive for a place of its size. You can get fried rice for ฿80 (~S$2.92), with options of chicken, pork, or seafood. For dessert, ice cream sundaes are on the menu for ฿50(~S$1.84).

Si Yaek Huatakhe Cafe Guesthouse - canalside diningImage credit: Si Yaek Huatakhe Cafe & Guesthouse via Facebook

The canal-side dining experience could also add this to the list of the best romantic restaurants in Bangkok. Sparks are bound to fly when you’re surrounded by the hanging potted plants and boats going by.

How to get to Si Yaek Huatakhe Cafe & Guesthouse

The guesthouse is on the outskirts of Bangkok. It’s a 30-minute drive from Suvarnabhumi Airport and just under an hour’s drive from the city centre. We recommend taking a Grab or tuk-tuk.

If you’re planning to take public transport, the journey will take over 90 minutes. Take the Phaya Thai – Suvarnabhumi line to Lat Krabang Station. From there, switch to the 1-73 EV : Circle : Namkrai Industrial Estate – Romklao bus and ride 10 stops to Hua Takhe Market Stop, which is a 4-minute walk from the guesthouse.

You can check out Hua Takhe Market when you visit, as its murals and mom-and-pop shops are hidden gems and can lead you to some interesting souvenir finds.

Sail with cats at Si Yaek Huatakhe Cafe & Guesthouse

Whether you’re a Bangkok veteran who wants to try something away from the usual tourist attractions, or you’re just a crazy cat person, staying a night here could be a fulfilling experience. Considering how doing all the activities and dining will only come to about S$40-S$50 a night, this would also be a great budget thing to do in the area.
