Panoramic train from Jakarta to Bandung

When it comes to slow travel, train journeys are one of the most convenient options out there. If you have various scenic train rides near Singapore on your bucketlist, here’s one more to add. The Argo Parahyangan Panoramic train – or GOPAR – is an executive class train from Jakarta to Bandung, rolling past paddy fields, jungles, and even a train tomb.

Our guide will walk you through all the essentials you’ll need to know, covering everything from ticketing info to the journey between the 2 cities.

Depart from Jakarta Gambir Railway Station

From Singapore, hop on a 2-hour flight to Jakarta. If you’re embarking on the train journey right after landing, head to Gambir Railway Station, which is a 47-minute drive away. Here, you can either purchase your tickets at the station or, if you want to beat the crowd, on the Kereta API official website. A seat on the Panoramic train costs Rp450,000 (~S$38.72) for one way.

From here, the train will travel through 4 stations – namely Jatinegara, Bekasi, Purwakarta, Cimahi – before reaching Bandung station. The total time taken for this train journey is about 3 hours, which is relatively shorter than a 5-hour plane ride between both cities which usually comes with at least 1 transit.

Enjoy views of jungles, padi fields & train tombs

scenic views

Covering approximately 150km of green landscapes, the journey will take passengers through hills, jungles, and paddy fields. Along the way, you’ll travel on 2 bridges: Cisomang Bridge, the highest railway bridge in Indonesia, and the 300m-long Cikubang Bridge that connects Jakarta to Bandung.

You’ll also pass by the Sasaksaat Tunnel, a heritage structure which was built during the Dutch East Indies rule, and even a train graveyard called the Purwakarta Train Tombs.

Train otakus will probably draw comparisons to Japan’s Sunrise Express Train, which has cosy private suites with full glass windows overlooking the surroundings. In comparison, the panoramic train from Jakarta to Bandung has floor-to-ceiling full glass windows, as well as a glass roof.

You’ll get to see a 180-degree view of what’s outside, all from the comfort of your train seat, which comes equipped with a tray table, reclining seats, and reading lamps. Each seat also comes with a power socket for those wanting to recharge their devices – plus, WiFi is available throughout the journey.

Do note that only the 38-seat carriage has the full glass windows, while the rest of the carriages feature regular cabins. Tickets are limited, so it’s advisable to book them in advance as Bandung is a hotspot for locals during the peak season from June to September

Onboard food & beverages for your 3-hour journey

As the train rolls through the scenic landscapes from Jakarta to Bandung, you can treat yourself to some snacks and beverages throughout the journey. Each passenger will get a complimentary snack box, which contains an assortment of local snacks such as cakes and refreshments like coconut water.

Hot drinks such as chocolate, tea and coffee are also available for purchase on board at an additional cost. Don’t forget that you can also pre-order your meals on their website or on the LokoLife app.

Hop onboard the Argo Parahyangan Panoramic train

The next time you’re visiting Jakarta, why not add 1 more city onto your itinerary by hopping onboard the Argo Parahyangan Panoramic train? It’s a refreshing way to explore another city, with gorgeous views right from the comfort of your seat as the train chugs along. Not to mention, the reclining chairs and complimentary snack boxes are added bonuses too.

Private Jet Villa in Bali

It’s not hard to find beautiful accommodation options in Bali. From affordable hotels to atas resorts, you’ll easily find something to suit your budget. And just as you thought you couldn’t find more unique resorts or hotels, there’s now the Private Jet Villa in Bali.

Perched at the top of Nyang Nyang Beach Cliff in Uluwatu, this 2-bedroom villa is located inside the body of an abandoned Boeing 737 plane.

The current exchange rate is Rp10,000 = ~S$0.85 as of 9th December 2024.

What amenities are included at the private jet villa in Bali?

Apart from its aesthetic private jet interior design, this villa has several amenities such as private pools by the ocean side, a 40-acre golf course with 5 manned holes, BBQ pits, and a variety of dining options catering to different groups of people coming here.

For those couples planning a romantic getaway, the villa offers poolside dining tables with beachfront views. For a cost of Rp 1,000,000, you can make your date extra special by arranging for their catered services like bouquet flowers and candle light arrangements. Those taking Jet Suites and First Class Suites can also opt for romantic decor to be arranged in your jacuzzis, using heart-shaped flower arrangements.

If you’re coming in a group of 6-12 people, there will also be long table dining (Rp 3,000,000) and BBQ services available. Do note that if you are planning to host an event at this villa, you’ll have to book 30 days in advance.

What can I do at the private jet villa in Bali?

Private Jet Villa Bali - massage

We arrange stays at villas with a purpose of relaxing, and you can do just that by booking an “in-flight” massage that uses essential oils and the accompaniment of ocean sounds. Their massage packages start from Rp 2,000,000 for a 1-hour massage session and there are also 1-hour packages for couples starting from Rp 5,000,000.

Private Jet Villa Bali - Infinity Floating Breakfast

Upgrade your experience here by ordering an Infinity Floating Breakfast (Rp 600,000), which consists of cut fruits and coconuts served on an inflatable floatie in the pool. For those who wish to explore the area instead of being holed up at the resort, you can also arrange a Picnic For Two, where the staff will prepare everything from the picnic mat, to the charcuterie cheese boards, French baguette, and Moet & Chadon French champagne.

For the uninitiated, this private jet villa is located at Uluwatu, near Nyang Nyang Beach, which makes visiting the nearby nightclubs and beach clubs in Bali viable activities as well.

What does it look like inside the Private Jet Villa?

Private Jet Villa Bali - dining area
Just thinking about the gorgeous ocean view from the dining area is enough to get us dreaming about staying in this villa.

Gone are the rows of seating separated by narrow aisles. In its place, furnishings that are more characteristic of luxury hotels than planes. Stepping into the Private Jet Villa, guests will first be transported to the dining room.

Private Jet Villa Bali - private balcony
A private balcony hanging over the cliff? Don’t mind if we do.
Image credit: Private Jet Villa via Facebook

The area is just perfect for dinners at the mini island table or even a tête-à-tête with a small party of people. The dining room is separated by a clear sliding glass door that connects right out to the most fascinating part of the villa, the plane’s wing. It’s now a patio that looks out to sea views you can enjoy around the clock.

Since Nyang Nyang Beach is a good spot for sunset, you’ll be able to enjoy it from the privacy of your, erm, plane wing.

Private Jet Villa Bali - room design
Image adapted from: Private Jet Villa via Facebook

Every corner of the Private Jet Villa is designed with warm tones and sleek wooden furnishings that can easily make anyone feel right at home. And when it comes to the rooms, they can rival other luxury hotels in Bali. There are 2 bedrooms in the villa, each with its own walk-in closet and vanity.

Private Jet Villa Bali - hot tub
The hot tub in this room is where the cockpit used to be.

Image credit: Private Jet Villa via Facebook

The hot tubs in both rooms are, hands-down, the most exciting features of the Private Jet Villa. Here’s a fun fact: it’s located where the plane’s cockpit used to be. It’s located right next to the windows that let natural sunlight in, along with an “exit door” overlooking the blue sea.

For the ultimate relaxing experience, the “exit door” opens out to a net bed where guests can relax and take in the view. Gee, an amazing view and wind in our hair? That already sounds like our dream vacation.

Private Jet Villa Bali - Uluwatu coastline

With the Uluwatu coastline being the highlight of it all, the owner made sure guests could enjoy the gorgeous view from wherever they are in the villa. After all, that’s what they’re here for.

Swim in an infinity pool overlooking the ocean

Private Jet Villa Bali - private pool
Image credit: Private Jet Villa via Facebook

And if you were wondering if there’s a swimming pool, you won’t be disappointed. Guests can take a dip in the private infinity-style pool overlooking all-encompassing views of the ocean. At night, you may even get to see stars due to the lack of light pollution in the area.

FYI, Nyang Nyang Beach is where the locals do paragliding, surfing, and other wind-related sports. You can probably imagine how windy it gets at night.

Besides the swimming pool, those who can’t withstand the cold can soak in the mini jacuzzi instead.

Would you stay overnight in the Private Jet Villa in Bali?

Private Jet Villa Bali - NyangNyang Bali

The good times don’t stop at the villa. Guests can get lit at the NyangNyang Bali, a pub and restaurant that’s just a 7-minute walk away. They serve local and Western dishes like Nasi Goreng and Sirloin Steak with Fries or Rice, including refreshing fruit drinks and alcoholic beverages such as the tequila-based Chilli Lime Margarita (Rp 80,000/glass).

Now comes the million-dollar question, how much does it cost to stay at Private Jet Villa? Well, it’s available for booking on sites like Agoda from about S$5,806/night for 4 people to sleep in comfortably. Sure, it doesn’t come cheap. But this gets you the experience of a lifetime, and you’ll have the whole place to yourself since there are not many other hotels or attractions nearby.

When you think of it, a stay at the villa takes your Bali trip to a whole new level because you’re technically staying in an abandoned plane.

New Bali hotels 2024

We often hear family and friends talking about how excited they are for their next Bali trip. Since Bali is so close and offers budget-friendly yet ultra luxe accommodations, it’s no surprise that Singaporeans flock there whenever they need a getaway.

If you’re an avid traveller to Bali, you’re probably sick of rotating through the same few hotels. Well, you can combat your boredom with these unique new Bali hotels in 2024 that will make you want to hop on a plane to Bali asap.

The current exchange rate is IDR10,000 = ~S$0.84 as of 15th November 2024.

Where to stay in Bali?

Those who’ve travelled to Bali a fair bit would probably already have Bali cities they love staying in – Canggu is popular with cafe-hoppers, while Ubud generally draws those who prefer culture over the touristy crowds of Kuta. If this is your first time in Bali, we’ve broken down Bali’s best neighbourhoods and what they’re known for.

Ubud – Best Bali area for nature, arts & culture

Anyone who’s watched Eat, Pray, Love will recognise Ubud as where Julia Roberts’ character spent much of her soul-searching journey. And for good reason too – this neighbourhood is filled with zen natural gems. Think rice paddies and waterfalls like the Tegalalang Rice Terrace and Tegenungan Waterfall. Ubud is also known to be an arts and culture hub, and you’ll find plenty of art galleries showcasing the work of Balinese artists here.

Uluwatu – Best Bali area for surfing

The coastal area of Uluwatu doesn’t just offer stretches of white sand beaches – it’s where you’ll also get Bali’s best waves for surfing. It’s no wonder you’ll find plenty of Bali’s surf schools in the area, where you can pick up the sport in just a day. If you’d rather admire the waves than ride them, Uluwatu also has a number of beach clubs that offer gorgeous cliffside views of the ocean.

Canggu – Best Bali area for cafe-hopping

If you’re always on the hunt for new cafes and restaurants, then Canggu is the town to stay in when you’re in Bali. You’ll find cafes on just about every corner here, serving all sorts of food like plant-based brunches and Balinese fusion. Many of these cafes also operate as co-working spaces, so this spot is popular with digital nomads too.

Kuta – Best Bali area for nightlife

When it comes to Bali after dark, it’s Kuta that comes to mind for those who eat, sleep, rave, repeat. Kuta is home to a plethora of bars and nightclubs, including established ones like White Rock Beach Club, Engine Room, and HQ Beach Club. With thumping beats and cheap house pours right next to the beach, we understand why people call Kuta “paradise”.

Seminyak – Best Bali area for fine dining

The other party central in Bali is Seminyak, which is home to acclaimed drinking holes Potato Head and KU DE TA. But Seminyak is also getting recognition for its growing number of fine dining restaurants here. There’s Sangsaka that does a modern take on Indonesian cuisine, as well as Mauri that serves what can only be described as contemporary Italian.

Sanur – Best Bali area for family-friendly activities

If you’re vacationing with kids in tow, you might want to skip rowdy Canggu and Kuta and head straight to Sanur instead. The beaches here are quieter and offer tons of watersports to try out – snorkelling, kayaking, and paddle boarding are easy options for kids to pick up. Up on the coast, you’ve got markets to explore, such as the Sindhu Beach Market and Sindhu Night Market for trinkets and souvenirs.

Nusa Dua – Best Bali area for luxury resorts

With hotels like Sofitel, St. Regis, and Ritz-Carlton parked here, it’s no surprise Nusa Dua is the luxury hot spot of Bali. And these are just the tip of the iceberg to the number of 5-star resorts here. Many of these beachfront properties offer in-house spas, private pool villas, and even access to a private beach away from the crowd.

Guide to Karimun Island, Indonesia

By now most Singaporeans would have made a weekend getaway or two to Bintan and Batam. But most of us would not have heard of another Indonesian island that’s easily accessible by ferry and is just 2 hours away – Karimun Island.

Also known as Nuwi Island or locally as Karimun Besar, Karimun island is often confused with Karimunjawa Island, which lies farther away in Central Java.

The current exchange rate is S$1 = ~Rp11954.53 as of 5th November 2024.

How to get to Karimun Island from Singapore

Getting to Karimun Island is as easy as taking a 2-hour ferry ride from Harbourfront Centre to Tanjung Balai ferry terminal. The ferry departs on even dates from Harbourfront at 11.40am while the return ferry departs from Tanjung Balai at 2pm local time.

Book a round-trip ferry ticket to Tanjung Balai terminal (S$98).

Contact: Sindo Ferry website

– Where to stay on Karimun Island –

Since the island isn’t as developed as its better-known counterparts – Bintan and Batam – you’ll be hard-pressed to find international hotel chains here. Nonetheless, there are a few decent options for accommodation.

– What to do at Karimun Island –

Karimun Island is known for its white sand beaches, aesthetic cafes, and lots of fresh seafood at super affordable prices. Without further ado, here are some of the best things to do at Karimun Island:

What’s an island getaway without pics of you posing with clear blue waters much to the envy of your IG followers? There are 3 main beaches on Karimun Island with Pelawan Beach being the most popular of the lot. Apart from the long stretch of sand for walks and picnics, the beach is surrounded by big rocks and mangrove forests.

While mostly quiet on weekday afternoons, it’s teeming with locals and tourists over the weekends and in the evenings. Because it lies on the west side of the island, it’s the perfect spot to catch the sunset too. Just be sure to time yourself as it takes 35 minutes to drive here from Tanjung Balai city centre.

Compared to Pelawan Beach, this one is more secluded and has a lot more trees providing shade. So, if you want some alone time to introspect, here’s where it’s at.

Are beach clubs in Bali kid-friendly?

Most beach clubs in Bali are kid-friendly, so families with young children can double-check the respective beach clubs’ policies before heading over. Note that some beach clubs have sectioned-off areas that are strictly adult-only, so avoid these parts if you’re bringing your little ones along.

Some beach clubs such as KU DE TA also have family-friendly events where children can do arts and crafts and play carnival games.

Is there a dress code for beach clubs in Bali?

The majority of beach clubs in Bali are very laid back. Most places do not have a strict dress code – just avoid wearing alcohol-branded clothes and you’ll be fine. There are some establishments that require proper swimwear if you’re using the pool so be sure to pack a change of clothes if needed.

There are some upscale beach clubs that uphold a smart casual dress code. If you’re unsure, always check the club’s website to find out the dress code.

Show up early to snag a day bed and settle in for a Roasted Pineapple Margarita, a cheesy pizza, and some crispy calamari. Oh, and you’re likely to spot somebody famous, since headliners like Carl Cox, Black Coffee, and Peggy Gou frequent this venue often.

Affordable Batam resorts

Most of us flock to new hotels in Singapore for a staycay when seeking a short getaway. But let’s face it, nothing beats the feeling of being completely outside the city. But there’s no need to spend hundreds on flights when you can easily treat yourself to a staycation at a Batam resort. Ferry tickets cost less than S$80/pax roundtrip, and will take under an hour to reach Bata. So, from taking part in watersports, relaxing in a private pool to enjoying a massage, there are lots to indulge in at these affordable Batam resorts.

The current exchange rate is IDR10,000 = ~S$0.84 as of 26th October 2024.

How to get to Batam from Singapore

There’s only one way to get to Batam from Singapore, and it’s via ferry. You can book a ferry from either HarbourFront Centre or Tenah Merah Ferry Terminal, and they’ll drop at the following terminals: Batam Centre, Waterfront, Sekupang, Harbour Bay, or Nongsapura. There are multiple ferries a day and the journey takes about an hour each way.

The waters can get quite choppy during the journey and those prone to seasickness are advised to consume motion sickness pills ahead of the journey. Try to eat light before boarding, and suck on candies or consume candied ginger to ease motion sickness.

Here are the ferry times through the week:

Singapore to Bintan Bintan to Singapore
  • Mon-Thu: 8.10am, 11.10am & 2pm
  • Fri-Sat: 8.10am, 11.10am & 5pm
  • Sun: 8.10am, 11.10am & 2pm
  • Mon-Sat: 2.35pm & 6.35pm
  • Sun: 2.35pm, 4.35pm & 6.35pm

Book a Bintan ferry ticket.

Once you’re at the ferry terminal, the remaining transport arrangements will be handled by Cempedak Resort’s staff.

The best time to go is from April to October so as to avoid the monsoon season. During these periods, water visibility is good for snorkelling and diving.

From November to March, you’ll get to enjoy cooler weather and strong winds, making it ideal for those who want to go sailing. However, expect passing showers and rain during these months.

Where to stay on Cempedak Island?

There are seaview villas and beach villas priced at:

  • $475/night on weekdays
  • $630/night on weekends
  • $795/night during peak periods

Both villas accommodate a maximum of 2 guests at the standard rate, but an extra bed can be added for an additional fee. The only difference between these accommodation types is that the beachside villas have more immediate access to the sea.

Both options get you all of the perks for a stay on Cempedak. You’ll have a large deck complete with sun loungers, a private pool, and an iPod speaker system so that you can have your own personal beachside rave from the comfort of the villa.

Things to do on Cempedak Island

Sea activities

sea activities

You’re probably not always going to stay cooped up in your villa though. Fortunately for you, like other beachside resorts, Cempedak Island has a whole host of seaborne activities.

sea activities 2

There’s an array of activities available on Cempedak Island, including the usual snorkelling, diving, kayaking, and sailing. Some might miss being able to jet ski but to be honest, the stand-up paddleboards make for an equally fun alternative.

The real perk about this place is that most of the equipment is free to rent, barring some of the more advanced stuff like diving gear, catamaran sailing, advanced kayaks, and windsurfers.

Land activities

land activities

Landlubbers need not worry, for there’s still plenty to do here if you wish to stay ashore. This includes nature walks, complete with guides to show you points of interest, as well as a variety of sports facilities like tennis, volleyball, and rock climbing. You can even take it slow at the library, or indulge in board games with other visitors, rum in hand.

Nature lovers would love to know that Cempedak Island also happens to be blessed with vibrant flora and fauna. The guides can point you in the right direction if you wish to experience the local wildlife, or perhaps even visit a sea turtle nest.

Dining

Dining promises to be an exciting experience at Cempedak Island, with daily menus prepared with local ingredients so that you’ll always have something new. They charge S$95++ for 3 meals, so all your dining needs are covered throughout your stay.

Events

Cempedak Island has an entire calendar of events for you to partake in. These include everything from meditation retreats, to meals by celebrity chefs, sailing races, and other workshops.

Do note that most of these activities require that you email Cempedak ahead of your visit to reserve a spot, and some are chargeable.

Bonus: Sister island for families, complete with childcare facilities

Whilst Cempedak Island is indeed an adults-only locale, it doesn’t mean that families actually need to scratch this off their list of travel destinations entirely. In fact, the resort actually comes with a family-friendly sister island, Nikoi Island.

Similar to Cempedak, it houses its own facilities, including a restaurant as well as its own set of land and sea-based activities, promising fun for the whole family. It comes with kid-friendly arrangements, and the island is watched over by staff who also provide daily activities for the little ones to participate in.

The Sleeper class is, of course, the newest shiny toy. You’ll have access to an adjustable recliner chair that flattens into a bed, with a window seat view of the outside. There are also privacy curtains you can draw to block the sun whenever you feel sleepy.

In addition to a thick quilt and pillow, there’s even an air purifier and light dimmers to help you sleep like a log. What makes the reclining chairs even more shiok is the massage feature.

If you need to stretch your legs for a smoke break, you can do so at the sealed smoking area downstairs beside the water cooler. Likewise, there’s also a washroom within the bus when you need to get down to business. Other complimentary features include a USB charger, shoe compartment, slippers, earplugs, snack buns, and free WiFi.

Long travels tend to get us all a bit hangry, no matter how comfortable they are. Halfway through the journey, you’ll be able to refuel outside with a hearty meal of your choice. The pit stops typically last around 30 minutes, so you’ll have more than enough time to enjoy the grub.

You can snag a 25% discount when using the promo code <NEW> if you book via the redBus app (App Store | Google Play). As there are only 4 buses, competition for seats is stiff, so try not to sit on it and book when you get the chance.
