Choose between a fun 5km walk or the challenging 10km run

Bond over a 5km leisurely walk or let your competitive spirit shine and run the 10km race. Either way, everyone gets to wear matching t-shirts and gush over goodie bags worth $50. This year the event pack will include a discount voucher to enjoy 40% off the new Skechers Hands Free Slip-ins and GOrun Pure 4 collections.

While the 10km category is reserved for individual runners, the 5km walk is open to all. Individual participants pay a registration fee of $30; 2 buddies joining together pay a fee of $50; and families with 2 adults and a kid under 12 years old can get the family bundle for $70.

If you’re a Skechers member, the same categories are priced at $23, $40, and $60 respectively. Registration for the event ends on 30th August 2023, so it’s time to start sending out invites to siblings, cousins, and friends. The more, the merrier.

Part of your registration fee will go to a good cause too. For every sign-up, Skechers is donating $2 to the Association of Persons with Special Needs (APSN) which will be used to buy shoes for the beneficiaries.

Enthusiastic runners get a 7.30am flag-off, but the village opens at 7am, so get there early to witness the sunrise against the backdrop of Marina Bay. Those going for the 5km walk will start slightly later at 8am. 

When the clock strikes 10am, that’s when the exciting stuff happens. Make sure to stay for the Lucky Draw because the winner gets 1 year’s supply of Skechers shoes worth a whopping $1,200. We’ll do the math for you, that’s enough footwear for the whole fam and then some.

In addition, the top 3 winners of the men’s and women’s categories, will be given cash prizes for completing the 10km run in the fastest time.

If you’re going to leg it with the little ones who just got the hang of walking on their feet, consider strapping them in a stroller or baby carrier – yes, that’s allowed.

Compete at the Giant & Cold Storage Kids Run

Instead of spending another weekend at an indoor playground or mall, take to the beach in Sentosa on 4th June to kick butt in the Giant and Cold Storage Kids Run.

It’s happening from 8am-11am, so prepare to run like toy store creditors are chasing you and bring a bunch of prizes home. Early bird tickets are $50/child or $60/adult and child and give you access to the race, as well as game booths at the carnival and other family activities onsite. 

Oh, and feel free to bring the whole fam bam. For every extra team member, you’ll need to top up $45/adult and $20/child. So, if you want to bring your twins, triplets, and even grandparents, by all means.

If there’s one thing we’ve learnt from Aesop’s Fables, it’s that slow and steady wins the race. That’s the motto we’re going with in attempting the SAFRA Wheels & Feet Charity Challenge. The inaugural virtual race has challenging distances you can take on by running/walking or cycling/blading anytime, anywhere.

But it’s not just a marathon you’ll be completing. By signing up, you’ll also be helping to raise funds for President’s Challenge to help lower income and vulnerable families. Happening from now till 28th May 2022, here are all the deets on how to participate:

Event categories and participation perks

You can choose to run, walk, cycle or blade through the race.

This year’s inaugural charity race has separate categories for those choosing to go on foot or wheels. There are different distances you can sign up for too, with a whopping 500KM available in the cycle or blade category for those who really want to push themselves to the limit.

The categories and their registration fees are as follows:

Cycle or blade

• 10KM: $30
• 50KM: $30
• 250KM: $50
• 500KM: $50

Run or walk

• 5KM: $30
• 10KM: $30
• 25KM: $50
• 50KM: $50

Families looking to get their kids involved in this good cause can also sign up as a team. It’s $30 for one parent and one child to compete together in either the 5KM run/walk or 10KM cycle/blade categories. You can also add on one more child to the team at an additional cost of $12.

Don’t be too alarmed by the race distances. You won’t have to hit the full length in one shot. Since this race is done virtually, feel free to tackle it at your own time and target. It’s a cumulative marathon, so just remember to complete the distances within the challenge period of 9th April to 28th May.

You can keep track of how much ground you’ve covered with the Strava app, which automatically logs your challenge progress. But you can also manually submit your stats by taking pictures of your display screens on other distance-tracking apps, treadmills, ellipticals and even stationary bikes, and uploading them onto the event’s portal.

As a reward for your hard work, you’ll get a load of swag, including an e-certificate of completion and a spiffy finisher’s tee in ombre colours. All participants will also get a goodie bag with sweet loot:

But, you can always raise more money by rallying support from your friends and family to make a donation under your name or team, where 100% of the proceeds will go towards President’s Challenge.

If marathons aren’t your thing but you would still like to donate, you can do so under individuals or teams, or directly support President’s Challenge by making an online donation. This will be open from now till 28th May 2022.

Raising funds for charity with SAFRA

The SAFRA Wheels & Feet Charity Challenge is just the first of many initiatives for SAFRA Cares, the social arm of SAFRA that engages NSmen and the public to give back to the less privileged through its fundraising efforts.

This year, the various SAFRA clubs will be rolling out monthly charity drives, with activities like esports and bowling to look forward to:

The events are to drive donations, where 80% will be contributed to President’s Challenge and 20% to the SAF Care Fund. The latter provides additional monetary support to severely disabled SAF servicemen injured in the line of duty, on top of MINDEF’s compensation and welfare. For the past three years, the funds have also gone on to help low income families who have been financially affected by Covid-19.

The best part of these SAFRA events is that you don’t have to be an SAF regular or serving NS to participate. As long as you’ve got a heart for the less privileged, and are game enough to take on a fun challenge, you too can help contribute to a good cause.

In this edition, $10 from every sign up will also go towards Nature Society’s efforts to rewild the Rail Corridor, by planting 6,000 trees to restore the natural habitat.

Brought in by JomRun, an Asia-based running app, the SpongeBob SquarePants, Crayon Shinchan and Garfield runs offer participants a choice of a breezy 5KM or long-distance 21KM to power their fitness journey forward. 

All three runs are held virtually and runners can choose between running their route of choice outdoors or doing it on the treadmill instead. If you can’t complete the full 5 or 21KM in one shot, it’s also perfectly fine to split up the distance across a couple of weeks, as long as you finish it by the event’s end-date.

5-21KM: Run longer distances for a more immersive experience

While being chased by dinosaurs, your task will be to escape the fictional Jurassic World of Isla Nebular with AR features to complete the virtual experience. If simple motivation doesn’t spur you to run faster, maybe a hungry dinosaur sprinting after you might do the trick!

Three different distances are available – 5KM, 10KM and 21KM – with longer runs taking you deeper into the adventure as you explore the island and look for your exit. A virtual finish line marks the end of your run – give yourself a pat on the back for making it out alive and getting a good calorie burn while you’re at it. 

The great thing about a virtual run is that you can pick your preferred time and place to complete the challenge. Busy folks can complete it in a nearby park connector after work, and nature lovers can find one of our island’s many nature running trails to truly feel like Owen Grady in Simon Masrani’s fantastical land.

Individual categories are available for runners looking to clock their new personal best, along with a variety of other categories as well. The Parent & Child combination is a good option for those looking to enjoy the prehistoric world with their little one. Marathons are usually about endurance and speed – a feat for the fit. But with the Gudetama Eggs-ercise Journey, everyone can take part and win.

All you have to do is walk to unlock “egg” checkpoints as you go along:

• Stage 1: 3KM
• Stage 2: 10KM
• Stage 3: 20KM
• Stage 4: 50KM

You’ll unlock virtual badges along the way. But even if you don’t manage to hit the minimum of 3KM, you’ll still get your finisher level – so everyone’s a winner. 

Here’s how to the virtual walk works: 

1. Register for the Gudetama Eggs-ercise Journey: The entry fee is $39.90 for regular entries, and $29.90 for early bird entries on 15th July 2021.
2. Collect your race pack: Collect it at Palawan Kidz City, Sentosa on 2nd, 3rd, 9th, or 10th October 2021, or have it delivered at $6/participant.
3. Walk: Clock in your walk from 1st – 31st October 2021. You can walk or run anywhere at any time of the day.
4. Get your medal: Your medal will be delivered to you within two to four weeks after the event ends.
