Unique nightlife spots in SG

Every once in a while, we all need a break from our busy working schedules and simply enjoy a good drink. However, some of us might have grown tired of the same bars we frequent at Clarke Quay, or clubbing for the millionth time at Zouk. What you need might be a unique nightlife haunt to switch things up.

From riding a 70-foot Ferris wheel inside a 3-storey club to arcade pubs and a spaceship-themed club, here are the places that will give you an unforgettable night out.

1. MARQUEE & AVENUE Lounge

70ft Ferris wheel & in-house bowling alley & Marina Bay Sands

Who says you need alcoholic beverages to have the full bar experience? Those who don’t consume alcohol would find themselves right at home at Fairytail Bar, one of Singapore’s first halal-certified bars.

They serve bespoke mocktails that are unique and creative like the Iago of Aladdin that’s a refreshing mix of lemongrass, ginger ale and Thai basil. They even have a wide variety of halal European, French and Italian cuisine like their authentic Spaghetti Carbonara, and Jarret D’ Agneau or braised lamb shank.

(Closed) Wiped Out

If you’ve been to Beauty World Food Centre, you might have come across Wiped Out amongst the other eateries there. This place gives off the heartland atmosphere with its casual setting and also the surrounding HDB blocks nearby. These don’t block the view though, which gives a great backdrop of the “heartland” skyline. Not something you can find at a regular ol’ hawker.

Don’t let looks deceive though, they have quite a few types of craft beers and some classics like Heineken and Guinness on tap. There’s also an option for a Bucket of 5 that you get to mix and match them too. These would go well with some Satay Bee Hoon from Jin Li Satay Bee Hoon or a Sizzle Mix Grilled Platter from Big Boys Sizzling Hotplate.

Best rooftop bars in Singapore

Finding the right bar can be quite a daunting task, even more so if you’re looking for the right rooftop one. Hopefully, this list has given you some direction to pick out the ones that best match the vibes and the people of the outing.

Late-night things to do in KL

There’s no doubt that Singaporeans love travelling to Kuala Lumpur (KL) for a getaway during long weekends and holidays.

Unlike JB, which is more convenient for us to visit, going to KL requires a fair bit of travelling. This means you should make full use of your time there, especially for those who drove for 5-6 hours or took a bus up to KL. While you’ve got your day plans covered, here are the best things to do in KL at night.

The current exchange rate is RM1 = ~S$0.29 as of 15th November 2024.

How to travel around KL at night

Renting a car is a great way to cover lots of ground if you want to maximise your time exploring KL after dark. Alternatively, if you don’t have a licence or know you’ll be hardcore partying, Grab is great for convenient point-to-point rides around the city.

For budget-friendly options, the Go KL City Bus provides free rides on various routes within the city, with some routes operating until midnight, though the bus schedule may vary.

1. Food Bazaar

Supper spot that opens till 2am

Food Bazaar has 3 outlets in KL, including its latest opening at TRX. While the food is good across all outlets, the one at TRX is where it’s at if you are hoping to feast and snap some IG-worthy pictures. It has an al fresco dining area that’s filled with neon lights and displays you can pose next to.

Within each outlet, they have tons of vendors that will leave you spoilt for choice. Stalls here offer local favourites like Ipoh Hor Fun (from RM11.50), as well as international cuisines such as Korean, Western, and Japanese just to name a few. Must-try dishes people have raved about on Google are their Satay (from RM10.90) and the Laksa Sarawak (RM12).

Before we dive into the world of NOVA, here’s a quick guide to getting there: head to the 62nd floor of One Raffles Place, where the entrance of the rooftop bar HighHouse greets you.

talent in NOVA lift

There, you’ll see another lift that brings you up to NOVA. This hidden, secretive element piqued our curiosity even before we set foot into the rooftop bar, and as soon as the elevator door opened, we were in awe of how stunning the space was.

Nova Rooftop Bar - Star-shaped steel structure in the air

The first thing that grabbed our attention was this colossal, star-shaped steel sculpture in the air. Fun fact: this beautiful centrepiece named ASTRA was designed by light artist, Jun Ong, who is based in Kuala Lumpur. While the artwork can mean many things to different people, Jun created it to reflect the bustling, dynamic city vibes.

ASTRA vibrant colours at night

ASTRA is even more spectacular against the sunset, showcasing its vibrant colours best at night. Seeing it in real life, we could see why it’s the most popular spot for taking pictures.

Enjoy the sunset & breathtaking city views

Sweeping view of Marina Bay

The sky is – quite literally – the limit at NOVA, as the bar is perched 282m above ground. You get the best view of Marina Bay here as it overlooks all the iconic skyscrapers in Singapore.

Golden hour

If time permits, we recommend getting here in the evening to catch the sunset; taking a sip of their cocktail while gazing at the sunset offered us some respite from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Nova Rooftop Bar - DJ Booth & dance floor

The rooftop bar is cleverly separated into 2 levels, where you have the DJ booth playing all kinds of music genres on the lower level with occasional live performances. Fun fact, the furniture at the lower deck is actually modular. This means the space can be transformed into a dance floor for guests to get their boogie on.

Nova Rooftop Bar - ASTRA in DJ Booth

No matter where you’re standing or sitting, the latest sound system allows you to enjoy the music in all its glory. For the latest updates on parties and events, as well as what DJs will be spinning, stay tuned to NOVA’s Instagram page.

talent admiring the sweeping city view

After you’re done exploring the first level, climb a flight of stairs and you’ll get to the main seating area with plenty of bar stools. Pick your favourite spot to enjoy the view!

Feast on an extensive selection of bites & brews

Nova Rooftop Bar - hanging out with friends over food & drinks

A night out with friends isn’t complete without some bites and drinks. NOVA comes through with an extensive range of cocktails, small bites, and even meals. From fresh oysters and Indonesian noodles to tom yum fries and churros, just name it and they probably have it.

Nova Rooftop Bar - Hot Platter

If you’re indecisive like us, their Hot Platter ($98) is a great choice as you get 4 different options, which means there’s surely something that will tickle your fancy. Do note that the Hot Platter is only available from 6pm-9.30pm.

Nova Rooftop Bar - Grilled Spanish Octopus

It comes with Grilled Spanish Octopus doused in Thai-spice dressing and a generous serving of Seasonal Vegetable Tempura, paired with sweet-spicy Szechuan garlic sauce.

Slow Cooked Australian Lamb Ribs with 5 pieces of Crispy Chicken

Meat lovers will love the choice of platter comprising Slow Cooked Australian Lamb Ribs in a rack of 5, alongside 5 pieces of Crispy Chicken. The former is marinated in garlic and scallion XO sauce, while the latter is evenly coated in gochujang sauce drizzled with mayonnaise. We appreciated the side of sesame cabbage slaw as it helped to quell the heavy flavours.

talent drinking cocktails

Moving on to cocktails, we tried 3 of their unique creations: the Sticky Mango Highball ($20) was a collective favourite as it was reminiscent of a sweet fruit-flavoured beverage, and is a great choice for those who don’t fancy strong alcoholic drinks.

Nova Rooftop Bar - Roselle & Tobacco & Grain cocktails

The Roselle ($22) tasted just as good as it looked—this tangy concoction features a winning combination of gin, sour roselle, sweet red vermouth, and soda. For something a little stronger, we recommend the Tobacco & Grain ($22), starring Haku vodka, and champagne. This drink strikes a good balance of spicy and woody notes, and the flavour grows on you the more you drink it.

Enliven your nightlife at NOVA, Singapore’s highest rooftop bar

Nova Rooftop Bar - ambience

NOVA is conveniently located in the CBD, and is within spitting distance of Raffles Place MRT Station. It opens till late, and the energy only intensifies as the night progresses.

So if you’re curious about what the highest rooftop bar in Singapore has to offer, gather your friends for an unforgettable night out this weekend!

Things to note when clubbing in Singapore

To ensure you have the best night out, you’ll want to take note of some rules to avoid getting in trouble with the authorities. First up, smoking is not allowed in all places of entertainment in Singapore, including discotheques and nightclubs, except at the approved smoking corners.

While drinks in the clubs might be pricey, you can’t bring your own alcohol in to save money. Bouncers stationed at the club entrance will conduct bag checks to examine if you’re bringing booze into the clubs, so don’t attempt to sneak any in your water bottles. Needless to say, this also applies to food.

Clubbing is when you and your friends can dress to the nines, but remember to check the club’s dress code. Some clubs, such as Marquee, follow a stricter smart casual dress code. For reference, this means that guys have to wear a collared shirt, and ladies aren’t allowed to wear slippers.

1. Marquee

EDM megaclub with famous international DJs

Ask anyone around town about nightclubs, and chances are they’ll tell you about Marquee – a Singapore staple – where some of the country’s richest people blow thousands of dollars every weekend.

best-clubs-singapore
Their monthly lineup used to feature A-listers such as Tyga and Martin Garrix.

After opening in 2019, this bi-level mega-club quickly became the place to be for those who like electronic music and famous DJs. Tiesto used to spin semi-regular sets and Zedd stopped by when he wasn’t busy in Vegas. Not to mention, Steve Aoki has thrown cakes twice from the booth.

Technology is almost as big an attraction as the eclectic DJ lineup. The space is designed with your Instagram in mind – with a slide, a ferris wheel and an 8K screen that delivers the realest visuals. Needless to say, Marquee dominates Singapore’s nightlife scene with bottle service, an all-star lineup, heart-thumping beats, and a posh crowd.

2. Avenue

Intimate lounge with weekly Afrobeats night

If you find yourself outside of Marquee but EDM isn’t your cup of tea, it’s not too late to take a short walk to Avenue. Also located inside Marina Bay Sands and run by the same entertainment group, Avenue is the place to be for those who’d rather sway and bend knees to the beats of hip-hop and R&B.

Here, expect to find games like 2 mini bowling alleys, a pool table, as well as old-school arcade stations like pinball and skee-ball. The dance floor might seem smaller than most clubs in Singapore. But if you have a table or are invited to one, feel free to clamber onto the sofa and twerk away.

They’ve just launched an Afrobeats, Reggaeton, and Afro Latina-themed event every Thursday. It’s called Vybe, and it certainly gives fans of these deep-bassline genres something to celebrate and get into a pre-TGIF mood.

Multiple dance floors, kitschy decor, and heart-thumping beats are what you’ll find at Drip.

drip-singapore

Located in the basement of the Concord Hotel & Shopping Mall, the club came through dripping in funky artwork, sculptures, and HDB-inspired dance podiums. LED-lit panels line the walls and old-school chess tiles cover the ceiling too, so it’s a photo op at every corner.

As for the music, Drip offers underground house and EDM in the main Drip Room, but often spices things up with some hip hop and top 40 hits in the Salt Room.

While Phuture blasts mostly Hip Hop and R&B, Capital serves up old school Pop, House, and Electronic. Zouk, on the other hand, is the main area where international guest DJs spin the decks. Genres include a range of Hip Hop, EDM, and Techno.

OG clubbers will know Tuff Club as the place to go for electronic music. It used to be a pop-up nightclub, but has since found a permanent home in Oxley Tower. Their list of international guest DJs are poppin’, with names including German DJ Rey&Kjavik, French DJ CARAVEL, and London-based DJ Dax J.

6. ARK11

Spaceship-themed club in Orchard

nightclubs singapore - ark11

ARK11 takes the cake with its creative sci-fi decorations and robot-helmed bar. Located in Orchardgateway, this futuristic club is probably the closest experience to what partying in 2050 might be. And yes, that is indeed a giant mechanical heart sculpture right next to the bar, beating along to the EDM tunes by both international and local DJs.

7. PULSE

Hidden club in Clarke Quay

Between Sam Smith and David Beckham, it’s clear that this poshy lounge is where international A-listers used to frequent and where you can camp out to get a pic or 2 with celebrities. Affordable drinks in CBD

Don’t let anyone tell you there aren’t any good late-night spots in the CBD. Tucked away on Cecil Street, Cherry Discotheque is lit until 3am most night. Here, you’ll be able to catch live DJs, groove to the beats of Top 40 jams, and order cheap alcohol with a side of fried popcorn chicken.

Unless you have a table reservation, you’ll be waiting in line with gaggles of girls singing to 50 Cents’ classics. Judging from the look of the younger crowd in sneakers and shorts previously, it’s safe to assume Cherry Discotheque is a stomping ground for the newly legal undergraduates.

But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t swing by for some reasonably priced drinks, 90’s Hip Hop and Reggaeton.

(Closed) Luxe Club

Occupying the space that Bang Bang used to be, Luxe Club is lit till 4am on most nights.

The 4,000sqft swanky space is the kind of place you’ll see in music videos. There’s an illuminated entry tunnel, a kinetic light art installation, and a giant bar near the entrance. Local acts like Sound Of Fai spin a wide variety of tunes here, ranging from 2000s top hits and latest EDM to deep and dirty house beats.

(Closed) Conversion Clinic

We’ll cut to the chase here: there’s no conversion clinic on Neil Road. What you might have walked past or seen floating on social media is a club where the LGBTQ crowd comes to play.

Once you get past the initial shock by  The Clinic’s front, proceed to the back where quirky graffiti wall arts, drag shows, and stiff drinks await. The raucous party at The Clinic only kickstarts around 11pm so, by all means, stay.

Tips for clubbing in Singapore

We had no problems forking out big bucks to cover our clubbing expenses back then and we certainly won’t now. However, there are a few things you can do to save some money and still do it big.

1. Pregame prior to going out

Whether you’re heading to a lowkey bar in Clarke Quay or the swanky rooftop of Marina Bay Sands, a night of paying for booze might burn a hole in your back pocket. Well, here’s a solution: pre-drink at home.

partying-singapore

Buy your party a bottle of vodka, tequila, gin – whatever you like – and bottoms up prior to going out. Not only will it give you a good buzz, it’ll also hopefully reduce the number of drinks you’re planning to order. Just make sure you won’t overdo it and get wasted before even reaching the club.

To get the party started, here’s a list of all the affordable alcohol shops so you can stock up on bottles.

2. Plan trip home in advance

A trip home from the club can be a pricey one, somewhere between $20-$30 or more due to the after-hours surcharge. Since you’d rather spend that money on another round of shots at the bar, you might want to consider pre-planning your ride home.

partying-singapore

There are a few options: have a designated driver AKA a sober sister in your group who doesn’t drink but still wants to join the party to drop you off at home; book a Grab Hitch in advance; or wait for public transportation to resume at 5.30am. However, the latter might require some serious willpower and a lot of energy drinks

3. Befriend the doorman for free entry

We’re no longer in the early 2000s, so don’t be surprised if there are no complimentary guest lists or free drinks for ladies. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t try to weasel your way in without paying.

clubbing-singapore

When it comes to clubbing, if you can’t afford to make it rain on expensive bottles, you’ll need to make friends with the right people in order to get freebies. Think club managers, bouncers and door hosts or hostesses. These are the people who have the power to let you cut the line, skip the cover charge and waltz in even when the club has allegedly hit its capacity.

They also have something called drink tickets which can get you comfortably drunk at no extra cost. As the saying goes, it’s not about what you know, it’s about who you know that matters.

Plan a night out at the best clubs in Singapore

Whether you’re a homebody or a party animal, you’ll probably want to blow off some steam and check out the nightlife scene in Singapore. If that’s the case, bookmark these venues and mark your calendar.

Then, round up your squad, book a table, sort out your tickets and have a good time. You deserve it.

Live music occurs Monday through Saturday, and the stages at each outlet are graced by different entertainment lineups. The bands play acoustic mandopop and western hits, so if you enjoy this genre of music, you can head down to your nearest mall for a quick listen.

Their newest outlet, Tipsy Unicorn, however, is not found in a mall but rather it’s a beach club in Sentosa. Here, you’ll find DJs spinning on the weekends with international guests occasionally showing up too.

Ume Maru at Far East Plaza

Secret bar alert! Some of you may recall a hidden izakaya-style bar in Bugis that only reveals itself once you “enter” a row of vending machines. The same folks behind that bar – Ume San 100 – have opened another bar of a similar concept but this time you’ll discover that the Japanese speakeasy is tucked behind a row of bookshelves.

You can find Ume Maru on the fifth floor of Far East Plaza and we highly recommend you add this place to your list of things to do in Orchard at night.

All you need to know about Ume Maru

Ume Maru at Far East Plaza - manga bookshelves

For anyone unaware of its existence, Ume Maru looks like a typical Japanese bookstore from the outside. The floor-to-ceiling shelves feature popular titles on display such as Naruto, School Rumble, and Rave Master. If that visual has got you anime and manga lovers excited, just wait till you get inside.

Simply push open the bookshelf right under the lighted up “Ume Maru” sign and you’ll find yourself in a bar themed after Jimbocho, Tokyo’s popular bookstore district. Video clips of popular anime series are projected on the walls and light features in the shape of books are hanging from the ceiling.

And yes, feel free to browse through the comic books while sipping on their cocktails.

What’s on the menu at Ume Maru?

During the day, the establishment acts as a Bento Bar serving lunch sets (from $9.90) between 12pm and 2.30pm. Dishes include Chicken Teriyaki Bento ($9.90), Ebi Curry Bento ($15.90), and Happy Avocado Maki ($15).

Come night, the place turns into a bar serving sharing dishes, mains, and plenty of drinks. To start off, the group can order Wagyu Kushi ($24) grilled skewers, Truffle Hotplate Maki ($20), and Crudo ($18) with salmon, tuna, and scallops.

If a full-on dinner is on the cards, then continue the night with their signature Yuzu Soba ($24), Spicy Miso Dry Ramen ($18), or Sushi Moriawase ($28).

Now, let’s talk about the drinks. It goes without saying that Ume Maru serves umeshu-based cocktails. The strawberry version of this plum wine is mixed with tequila in a cocktail known as Songbird ($22).

One you’ll see ordered consistently throughout the evening is Matxha, featuring matcha umeshu, of course. The concoction also contains matcha tea, elderflower, and yuzu marmalade.

Light of Nara ($22) is another cocktail that features muscat umeshu, nashi pear umeshu, and rose vermouth. Paying homage to the city of Nara, the drink is served in a gorgeous deer-shaped glass too.

Apart from the cocktails, patrons will be able to savour highballs (from $16) and a vast collection of house craft whiskies (from $16). Choose to pair these with your food or with a curated selection of chocolate bonbons.

Have a drink or two at Ume Maru, a manga-themed bar in Orchard

We love all things Japan and Ume Maru is yet another new restaurant and bar in Singapore to check out. Combined with the promise of a speakeasy adventure and manga theme, it’s the perfect recipe for a fun evening in Orchard.

Parkview Square in Bugis

Unanimously dubbed “Gotham City building” amongst Singaporeans, Parkview Square looks like it came straight out of a Batman film. Drawing inspiration from NYC’s Chanin Building – a skyscraper in Manhattan – its exterior features a brown lacquer finish, and its open plaza spots many statues of famous intellectuals including Mozart and Rembrandt.

If admiring the building from outside isn’t enough, head on in and be transported back to 1920s New Orleans – think red carpets, intricate wall carvings, stained glass windows, and jazz.

An iconic Art Deco monument

Parkview Square

Nestled in the centre of Bugis, the towering building of Parkview Square is hard to miss, considering how different it looks compared to the surrounding malls and hotels.

Not only does it look expensive, it actually is expensive. Parkview Square has previously been nominated as one of the most costly office buildings in our city.

Fun fact: it’s also home to several foreign embassies including the United Arab Emirates, Austria, and Mongolia.

The 3rd floor used to be the grounds for Parkview Museum, which used to hold frequent exhibitions focusing on international contemporary art. Unfortunately, it has closed down permanently and relocated its headquarters to Beijing instead.

Parkview Square - The Golden Crane

However, that doesn’t mean the building lost all its artistic panache. One of its main art pieces, The Golden Crane, still remains outside the entrance of the building.

It depicts a crane who yearns to go back to its birthplace, a temple in Hubei, China. There is a Chinese poem scripted on its base which talks about homesickness, and the creature is also facing in the direction of China.

ATLAS bar – Largest gin collection in the world

Before ATLAS bar got its reputation for being a gin enthusiast hotspot, it was actually a wine connoisseur’s playground. This grandiose bar was named Divine Wine Extraordinaire at that time, and what is a 3-storey gin tower now was previously a wine chiller.

It currently houses the largest gin collection in the world so gin enthusiasts will be spoilt for choice. Yes, there are over 1,000 different gins here, plus a good selection of other spirits.

Notable cocktails include the signature ATLAS Martini (from $26) – a complex concoction of Ford’s London Dry Gin, blanco vermouth, orange bitters, and Champagne vinegar. If you prefer something a little more zesty and elegant, try the ATLAS French 75 (from $26) – a mix of the same gin with some champagne, peach, lemon, and salt.

For something truly special and if you have $100k to drop, check out the Goût Americain 1907 Heidsieck & Co Monopole – touted as the world’s most expensive champagne that was found at the bottom of an ocean in a shipwreck.

For most of us, just knowing that we’re sitting within the vicinity of such an incredible piece of history is good enough. I mean, the bottles are over a hundred years old, survived a sinking ship, and there’s still champagne in them.

Parkview Square - Beef
Image credit: ATLAS Singapore via Facebook

Although known mainly for its alcoholic beverages, the bar boasts a pretty extensive food menu too. Relish in refreshing starters such as Oysters Mignonette with Lemon (from $38) or if you’ve got space for a main, check out Steak Frites (from $48) – sirloin or ribeye topped with smoked bone marrow butter and paired with shoestring fries.

Parkview Square - Creme Brulee

As the saying goes, “There’s always room for dessert”. So, dig into some Warm Madeleines (from $18) or Creme Brulee (from $18) to end your meal with a sweet treat.

Parkview Square – visit Singapore’s Gotham building

Whether you’re just dropping by when in Bugis or are specifically looking for a new enclave to meet like-minded gin fans, it’s safe to say that Parkview Square is an architectural icon that’s bound to wow its visitors. Definitely worth bookmarking if you’ve got overseas friends visiting Singapore for the first time.

Getting here: Alight at Bugis MRT, exit the station via Exit E, then walk 30m to Parkview Square.

Address: 600 North Bridge Road, Singapore 188778
