Solace Studios – Transport-themed photobooths for $10

Travelling and posing at self-photo studios in Singapore are favourite pastimes amongst Gen Zs and millennials – but what if you could combine both? If you’re looking for a quick getaway with your boo, but your bank account says otherwise, get your couple travel pics at Solace Studios’ transport-themed photobooth.

Plane lavatory-themed photo booths at Haji Lane

Aeroplane photobooth - plane bathroom booth

At the Haji Lane outlet, the Korean photo studio has set up 3 self-serve booths designed to look like a plane lavatory. Each booth comes with a mirror, fake sink, and even the sliding locks they have on flights. There are also cute aeroplane windows and signages to zhuzh up the bathroom layout, and add to the illusion.

Aeroplane photobooth - aeroplane alley and passport covers
Image adapted from: @recesstable and @solacestudios.sg via Instagram

It’s not just the booths that are aeroplane-themed; the entryway and props are too. You can find sunglasses or plushy headbands, or opt for passport covers from a variety of countries. There’s even a metal suitcase for you to roll and sit on for pics.

Each booth fits up to 4 pax, so you can get squad photos for your group chat if that Bali trip didn’t take off.

Aeroplane photobooth - boarding pass photostrip

There’s no need to extend your arm out to use the 0.5x setting on your iPhone camera. The photos are taken with a high-angle camera, which ensures that you get the most out of the booth in your photo, though you can always take your pictures at normal angles with your phone.

There are plenty of adorable frames to choose from, such as regular 4-picture frames with aeroplane stickers or a mock boarding pass with faux flight details on the side. You get 2 multi-picture frame strips or 1 single-frame strip for $10 and after that, it’s $2 for every additional strip.

Subway-themed photobooths at Orchardgateway

If the plane pics aren’t enough to fool your friends, being on a New York City subway probably would. Solace Studios at Orchard Gateway closely mimics the iconic underground transport system. You’ll spot similar details like subway maps, gantries, and steel sliding doors.

Psst, you don’t have to worry about unknowingly breaking any MRT rules here. Of course, don’t go all feral and break every law in the book, duh.

solace studios - subway station
You can mimic all your K-Drama or Hollywood poses here without looking too delulu.

You’re spoilt for choice here with the number of photobooths here. Pick from Grey Classic Booth, High Angle Train Cabin, Train Door Cabin, Fisheye Lens Train Cabin, and White Cabin Booth.

The classic booth is the cheapest at $10 for 2 photo strips or 1 multi-frame printout. For those coming in groups, we recommend the cabins, which can accommodate more people within a frame. It’s slightly pricier at $12 for the same number of prints. You can also request for more prints at $2 each, and if you’re ready to hard launch bae on IG, digital files and gifs are free to download.

Other photobooths at Solace Studios’ main branch

Aeroplane photobooth - Vanity and pastel rooms
Image adapted from: @solacestudios.sg via Instagram

If you haven’t had enough, head to Solace Studios’ main branch a few doors down from the aeroplane-themed outlet. This outlet has 2 levels of 9 different rooms – which means plenty of photo ops for the whole gang.

Aeroplane photobooth - fish-eye lens
Image adapted from: @solacestudios.sg

Level 1 has standard photo booths with pastel backgrounds and a normal angled camera, along with 3 vanity stations with hair dryers, mirrors, and props to get yourself dolled up. On level 2, you’ll find their experimental rooms – 2 with low-angle cameras and another 2 with fish-eye lenses. You can’t get any more Y2K than this, with digicam props and music-video-esque shots.

Take to the skies & the underground at Solace Studios

The next time you run out of date ideas, give Solace Studios’ photobooths a go. You no longer have to worry about holding up the line for the lavatory because you’re getting bathroom selfies. And from $10/strip, it’s a pretty affordable hangout idea for your group chat or partner.

4. Sang Nila Utama Garden – Bali vibes

instagrammable things to do singapore - sang nila utama garden

Ancient Bali vibes in Singapore? Say no more. Hidden in Fort Canning Park is Sang Nila Utama Garden, a representation of what the park might’ve looked like in the 1200s. The most prominent feature here is the Javanese gateway that resembles the famous Gates of Heaven in Bali. Other than that, spot stone statues and vases that make you feel like you’re in Bali itself.

5. Yunnan Garden – Lesser-known garden in NTU

instagrammable things to do singapore - yunnan garden

Yunnan Garden is every bit deserving of its name. It’s pavilions, stone paths, ponds, and manicured gardens galore over at this secret spot at Nanyang Technological University (NTU). This heritage space easily resembles a setting that fits in with a period drama, also thanks to the fact that the Chinese Heritage Centre is located within its vicinity.

Address: 12 Nanyang Drive, Singapore 637721
Opening hours: 24 hours, Daily

6. Ulu Sembawang Park Connector – Sunrise spot with grassy fields

Once in awhile, we all need a detox from city life. And the good news is that you don’t need to leave the country to do so. You can get lots of fresh air and reconnect with nature when you cycle or stroll along the Ulu Sembawang Park Connector. The trail’s an easy 1.3km long and leads you to a sunrise viewing point that’s worth waking up early for.

7. Changi Bay Point – “Jeju island” in Singapore

Changi Bay Point is rather underrated, given that its location is rather out of the way. But, trust us when we say the journey here will be worth it – especially if you’re all about that sun, sea, and sand life. Head over early in the morning to catch the sunrise, then stroll or cycle along a wide bridge. Continue forth to find benches that look out to the quiet waters and a viewing pavilion.

8. Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve – Nature trails & wildlife spotting

instagrammable things to do singapore - sungei buloh wetland reserve

Ask any Singaporean where to spot local wildlife such as exotic birds, mangrove critters, and even small crocodiles, and they’d likely quote Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve

This Instaworthy nature trail isn’t just great for clocking your daily cardio; it’s also the perfect setting for aesthetic pics amidst nature. We’re talking “onion” pavilions that overlook JB, boardwalks, a viewing tower, a netted canopy walk, and even an adventure trail for kids that looks like an art installation.

10. Kranji Marshes – Marshland great for birdwatching

We’re so used to seeing tall buildings and HDB blocks day in, day out, so anything that makes us feel closer to nature is a plus point.

instagrammable things to do singapore - kranji marshes

That said, you can also snap plenty of photos that look like you’re nowhere in the city right at Kranji Marshes. It’s got an easy walking trail that’s surrounded by tall grass, lots of wild greenery, and if you’re lucky, exotic birds flying around. Be sure to visit the Raptor Tower for a vantage point over the marshes.

12. Lorong Halus Bridge – Aesthetic red structure

instagrammable things to do singapore - lor halus wetland

You can’t say you’ve truly visited Punggol without having visited Lorong Halus Wetland, an area along the Pasir Ris-Punggol park connector. It’s most recognisable for the Lorong Halus Red Bridge, but it’s also chock full of nature sights that’ll make it seem like you’re nowhere near Singapore. Think tall lalang and ponds with water reeds to serve up a rugged backdrop for your pics.

13. Keppel Hill Reservoir – 6m-deep blue lake tucked in the forest

These steps used to hold a diving board.

For a next-level hiking adventure, embark on an off-the-radar trail into Singapore’s historical ruins, and find the abandoned Keppel Hill Reservoir. The trail is comparable to the one in Fort Serapong as it takes you past a creepy WWII bunker, an eerie Japanese tomb, and a blue-tinged swimming pool-turned-reservoir. Pretty to look at, but avoid actually going for a dip.

14. Coney Island – Private island vibes

instagrammable things to do singapore - coney island

Imagine a secret beach, totally crowd-free and perfect for introverts to snap some beach selfies in peace. Follow the signboards from Coney Island‘s West entrance to the Lorong Halus East Gate, and you’ll stumble upon a hidden beach where your chances of getting photobombed by strangers drastically decrease.

If you’re up for a cycling adventure, you can venture on an 8.2km ride from Pasir Ris to Coney Island.

Picnic spots in Singapore - Toa Payoh Park

Need an Instagrammable spot for a fitspo photography session? Say no more. Toa Payoh Town Park is a popular attraction among photographers due to its charming stone arch bridges, towering trees, and rustic gazebos tucked around every corner. All in all, the sights in Toa Payoh Town Park are spot-on for creating a retro feel or a vintage-inspired background for your snaps.

There are a number of springtime destinations near Singapore with views to die for. But without hopping on a plane, you can journey down South to Telok Blangah Hill Park for equally breathtaking sights. Besides classy staircases that give major fairytale vibes, the terrace garden is teeming with pink bougainvillaea flowers.

More good news for introverts: this park is considered to be one of the best hidden picnic spots in Singapore. We suggest heading there on weekdays, so you won’t have to brave the crowd to find a good spot to set up camp amidst the vibrant blooms.

But make your way to the Tanjong Rhu Promenade, and it’s likely to become one of your fave places to have a scenic stroll. You’ve got views of the tranquil Kallang Basin on one side, and the twinkling urban lights on the other.

18. Canterbury Road – Date-worthy spot for sunsets & picnics

instagrammable things to do singapore - canterbury road

Although a popular destination for pre-wedding shoots, Canterbury Road is generally quiet on most days because it’s a little out of the way. But the views and serene environment you will be rewarded with when you get there will definitely make up for it. We recommend visiting just in time to catch the sunset to beat the heat and capture some perfect golden hour shots.

Bonus: If you’re a fan of colonial-style architecture there are a few old-school bungalows along the road for you to admire.

19. Chek Jawa – Capture scenic ocean views from the viewing jetty

instagrammable things to do singapore - chek jawa
Here you’ll find a cottage-turned visitor centre that looks like it’s straight from the 1930s.

Take a short boat ride from Changi Point Ferry Terminal and you’ll find yourself on Pulau Ubin, an island northeast of the mainland that’s steeped with nature and history. 3km from the jetty lies the Chek Jawa wetlands.

Venture a little further, and you’ll find a boardwalk that provides an unobstructed coastal view, popular with plane enthusiasts who like to capture planes inbound to our airport. 20. Bukit Batok Hillside Park – Apocalyptic torii gates

instagrammable things to do singapore - bukit batok hillside park

That shot of the thousands of torii gates is a must-have on your feed if you’re visiting Fushimi Inari in Kyoto, Japan. But here’s where you can get a similar photo closer to home. Hidden within Bukit Batok Hillside Park are “torii” gates – an abandoned relic from when this place was known as Greenwood Park.

So it’s not as brightly-coloured as the ones in Kyoto, but you could cosplay Lara Croft or Indiana Jones for a unique pic.

Address: 1 Bukit Batok West Avenue 2, Singapore 659203

21. Green Corridor Truss Bridge – Industrial railroad shots

The remnants of the defunct 24km-long Malaysian KTM railway runs from Woodlands all the way to Tanjong Pagar. It’s since been repurposed into a hiking trail known as the Rail Corridor. A highlight along the northern leg of the Rail Corridor are the 2 Truss bridges. It’s popular with hikers and photographers.

22. Macritchie Treetop Walk – 25m above the forest floor

instagrammable things to do singapore - macritchie treetop walk

Whether or not you’re a seasoned hiker, Macritchie Treetop Walk needs no introduction. After all, it is the number one answer whenever anyone asks “where should I go for a hike, ah?” Take in the 360° view of the Central Catchment Nature Reserve and catch a glimpse of Lower-Peirce Reservoir as you’re suspended 25m above the forest floor.

While you’re there, stop by the Jelutong Tower to go bird-watching or wander along the 1.5km-long Chemperai trail that runs alongside the reservoir. There are wooden benches along the trail for you to rest your weary legs and just listen to the surrounding nature.

If you’re searching for Santorini-style coastal shots, take a journey to the end of the East-West line to the Raffles Marina Lighthouse. In our opinion, this lighthouse might take the crown as the most photogenic lighthouse in Singapore.

Snag a picture during sunset with Malaysia in the background at the wharf that leads to Raffles Marina Lighthouse. It’s a spot that’s popular for wedding shoots and anyone in search of great golden hour photos. If a journey to the West in time for sunrise or sunset sounds a little tedious, we’ve got plenty of other ideal sunrise and sunset spots.

25. Yishun Dam – Tranquil boardwalk

Although Singapore is known to be a concrete jungle, there are pockets of naturally beautiful  spectacles – you just need to know where to look. Westies have one right in their backyard, Yishun Dam. Also known as Seletar Dam, it’s a popular backdrop for sunset dates and picnics devoid of crowds.

At one end, you can also visit Rower’s Bay Park, a serene 2km boardwalk that’s flanked by tall reeds and willow trees. For ideas on other attractions in the area, check out our guide on things to do in Yishun

Journey further up the track and you’ll also come across a couple of mysteriously abandoned cars, as well as a temple on a hill.

Fervent cyclists can probably conjure up a list of Singapore’s most scenic spots at will. After all, they’ve spent countless hours pedalling on the winding paths of long-distance cycling routes. The North Eastern Riverine Loop most likely sits near the top of their list.

The 18km-long route will see cyclists riding along quiet nature reserves and parks in North-East Singapore, like Sengkang Riverside Park. The route is also peppered with several points of interest worth taking a detour for, like Punggol Container Park and the offshore Coney Island.

Unique buildings in Singapore

We may be small, but Singapore is home to a tonne of impressive and unique buildings. After all, our city is known for its highly photographed skyline. But aside from the towering Marina Bay Sands structure or durian-esque Esplanade, you’ll find that there are other one-of-a-kind buildings to explore.

We’re referring to IG-worthy buildings that look like stacked dim sum baskets, “misaligned” residential blocks, and an office that gives off a 2D optical illusion. Read on to discover more:

1. The Gateway – Sharp exteriors that appear 2D from certain angles

Unique buildings in Singapore - The Gateway beach road

You might’ve done a double take when walking past The Gateway on Beach Road. Before you rub your eyes in disbelief, this building does indeed look like 2 standing paper-thin panels from various angles, thanks to its sharp edges that help create this optical illusion. And fun fact: the architect for this building also designed the Louvre Pyramid in Paris!

Recommended spot to shoot from: Cross the road to the entrance of Duo Galleria and shoot close to the ground with the camera tilted upwards.

2. The Interlace – Misaligned Jenga-style residential blocks

Unique buildings in Singapore - The Interlace residential blocks

The Interlace has certainly got us scratching our heads – how do lifts and staircases operate if the blocks aren’t vertically aligned? The TL;DR version is that each block in this condo is a separate 6-storey building, so there aren’t any connections between the various blocks.

This smart design has helped to maximise the space so residents have plenty of outdoor communal areas to chill at.

Recommended spot to shoot from: Cross the road to the opposite sidewalk to get a full view of the unique structure.

3. Ferrell Residences – Twisted structure

Unique buildings in Singapore - Ferrell Residences

Walk along Bukit Timah Road and you’ll come across a spine-looking building. For the uninitiated, this structure is actually the Ferrell Residences, an exclusive condo that’s 24 storeys tall. What makes this place stand out is its symmetrical curved edges on each floor, seemingly twisting and extending upward. Pretty cool, if you ask us.

Recommended spot to shoot from: Walk to the foot of the overhead bridge that’s right outside the condo and shoot from a low angle to capture the twists in the building.

4. Jewel Changi – Rain vortex from the roof

Unique buildings in Singapore - Jewel Changi rain vortex
The Disney100 installation.

Our country’s crown jewel, Jewel Changi has attracted a slew of international attention since being touted as home to the world’s tallest indoor waterfall. External features were built on the roof to collect and channel rainwater down, forming the 40-m tall Rain Vortex. Its sheer size also makes it the perfect backdrop for light projections, such as the recent Disney100 event.

In case you were wondering how expensive or un-green it is to cool down such a huge space, it’s actually not; chilled water pipes run underneath the floors to cool the air just to human height.

Recommended spot to shoot from: Head to the 2nd or 3rd level of the Shiseido Forest Valley walking trails to get an eye-level frontal view of the waterfall.

5. Supreme Court of Singapore – UFO top

Unique buildings in Singapore - Supreme Court

Don’t be alarmed – this building doesn’t belong to extraterrestrials. The flying saucer-shaped structure is actually part of the Supreme Court of Singapore, which houses the Court of Appeal and High Court.

In fact, it is a viewing gallery that is open to the public when you join a free tour of the court. You’ll get to head up and see the interior, enjoy the view of the surrounding City Hall area, and learn about Singapore’s heritage.

Recommended spot to shoot from: Walk to the entrance of the Parliament House to get a full overview of the building.

6. Ayer Rajah Telephone Exchange – Tetris-like building

Unique buildings in Singapore - Ayer Rajah Telephone Exchange

Set next to Singapore Polytechnic is Singtel’s Ayer Rajah Telephone Exchange at Dover Road, which exudes strong 3D Tetris game vibes. Was it made to resemble an old-school standing telephone? We’ll never know, as little to no information about the design of the building has been found. I guess we’d just have to rely on our imagination.

Recommended spot to shoot from: Walk to the Singapore Polytechnic Graduates’ Guild and shoot from the roundabout.

7. Sky Habitat – 38-storey LEGO-looking condo

Unique buildings in Singapore - Sky Habitat lego condo

Located in the quiet neighbourhood of Bishan, Sky Habitat is a condo resembling dozens of LEGO blocks stacked atop one another. At first glance, this residential complex might induce some acrophobia because the buildings are 38 storeys tall – quite uncommon for a condo. But it’s because of this clever design that abundant light and fresh air circulate in every unit.

Recommended spot to shoot from: Walk from Bishan MRT Exit D and cross the road to the open field.

8. The Hive in NTU – Towering “Dim sum” baskets

Unique buildings in Singapore - NTU HIve

Those familiar with the West might have come across The Hive at NTU. These larger-than-life honeycombs or dim sum basket lookalikes are where students gather to hang out and study.

Unique buildings in Singapore - NTU Hive sheltered walkway

The Hive also sports a unique ventilation system that helps cool the environment naturally without the need for air conditioning or fans – a plus point for sustainability.

Recommended spot to shoot from: Shoot from the sheltered walkway opposite the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences building.

Grab your camera & visit these unique buildings in Singapore

We’ll always love our iconic red-bricked pretty HDB blocks, but Singapore is also home to a slew of cool architecture that’s worth checking out. These buildings aren’t just IG-worthy backdrops for your OOTD shots; they’re also functioning commercial and residential spaces that are used every day.

Behind every quirky building is a team of experts from the Built Environment industry who help plan, design, construct, and maintain the structure. And if you thought that the industry was all tough manual labour, think again. Cool advanced tech like digital design tools with AI, robots and automated fabrication are now used in the creation and maintenance of buildings.

Eco-friendly folks will also be thrilled to know that the industry continually tries to fight climate change with clever designs that have made buildings sustainable in tropical Singapore – some even net zero.

Those who feel inspired by this list and have visions for the next innovative building in Singapore, consider a career in the Built Environment Industry. You might just be able to turn your childhood LEGO structures into reality.

Working Title Riverside cafe

Bust out your best brunch outfit and hit up your friends, ‘cause it’s time to go on a picnic date. Aside from the usual haunts like Marina Barrage and Palawan Sentosa, we’re here to introduce you to another spot: Working Title Riverside

This cafe’s basically a 2-in-1 solution for your picnic plans – you can get your grub here, as well as a picnic mat to chill on and a basket to store your food. ‘Nuff said, we’ll spill the details now:

IG-worthy interior with riverside views

This halal-certified cafe is a quick 10-minute walk from Lavender MRT, located along the scenic Kallang river. In case you’re unable to find the place, simply look out for Kallang Riverside Condominium – the cafe is on the 1st floor near the entrance.

You’ll notice a huge wooden dining table too – it’s actually a communal eating space so you can mingle with other cafegoers. If you wish to work here, there are charging outlets and free Wi-Fi available. Just try not to hog the tables during peak hours so other customers can have a seat as well.

If you love the great outdoors, head out to the alfresco dining area instead. You can feast on the surrounding greenery as you feast on your food. The cafe is pet-and child-friendly so they can roam around in nature here. Plus, the colourful aesthetics make for a great photospot!

Brunch sets at $20, with free picnic mats

tater tots and burger

It’s time to satisfy your tummy. If you’re visiting with your mates, get the Truffle Tater Tots ($12) to share – they’re crispy on the outside and well coated with an oaky truffle flavour. For a more substantial meal, try the Classic Burger ($15) or the Eggs Benny ($16). The former has a juicy Angus beef patty and the latter is a yummy vegetarian option.

The cafe also currently offers a $20 brunch promotion from now till 22nd November 2023. You can choose 1 burger – either the Fit Bird (U.P. $16) or The Classic (U.P. $15), 1 brunch plate – either Avo Toastie (U.P. $13) or Chokona Pancake (U.P. $12), and 2 coffees of your choice. This is an all-day deal, BTW.

picnic mats

Okay, we lied. There’s 1 more spot to dine at here – the grassy area outside the cafe. Don’t despair if you didn’t bring your own picnic mat as the cafe has free tatami-style ones for loan. They’re kept in a cupboard at the store entrance, and there is no time limit for your usage. Once you’re done, wipe off any dirt on the mats and return it back to the cupboard.

Working Title Riverside also gives out FOC reusable rattan bags if you choose to take away your F&B. Just approach any of the friendly staff and request for the bags. They’ll help to pack your food so you can conveniently bring your food to your desired picnic spot. And yes, you’re free to take the bags home after you’re done.

Plan a cute date at the Working Title Riverside

We’ll never say no to a new date spot in Singapore, especially one with both indoor and outdoor options like Working Title Riverside. Furthermore, picnic fiends need not bring any equipment here as everything is provided for you, for free

We recommend making a table reservation if you’re planning to sit indoors, as the cafe gets pretty packed especially on weekends. And if you’re intending to have your meal outdoors, remember to check the weather forecast before heading down.

Barbie & Oppenheimer at The Projector

Open TikTok, Instagram, or Threads and you’ll probably see endless talk of 2 things flooding your feed – Barbie and Oppenheimer. These latest movies have taken the world by storm, with plenty of people raving about them.

If you’ve yet to catch these shows, consider planning a day out with your besties and watching them at The Projector at Golden Mile Tower. They’ve also busted out a bunch of Barbie and Oppenheimer-themed photo ops, so you can capture chio memories of your time there.

Catch the anticipated Barbie & Oppenheimer movies

In case you know nothing about these 2 new movies, here’s a quick rundown of them so you won’t be pestering your friends with questions during showtime.

Starting off with Barbie: the film follows the most recognisable doll in the world, played by Margot Robbie, as she embarks on a journey to rediscover herself after having gone through an existential crisis. Joining her on the ride is the iconic Ken, played by Ryan Gosling. We won’t spill any secrets, but expect all things glitz and glamour with a touch of feminism with this movie.

Meanwhile, Oppenheimer is a biographical film that details the makings of the world’s first atomic bomb by physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, played by Cillian Murphy. Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, this movie takes on a more sombre tone with elements of heart-stopping action sequences and visuals – including the infamous detonation of the bombs.

You might be wondering why these 2 shows have been constantly grouped together – even eliciting the name Barbenheimer – despite the significant differences in genre and plot. That’s because these films were released on the same day, meaning they are double feature movies.

When timed right, viewers can then catch both Barbie and Oppenheimer on the same day for maximum viewing pleasure. And given the nostalgia these 2 films bring, indie cinema The Projector makes for the place to watch them at.

We’ve done the work and consolidated the cinema’s show timings for you. Those looking to hit up both films on the same day can consider these dates:

  • 25th July 2023: Barbie at 4pm, Oppenheimer at 7.30pm
  • 26th July 2023: Barbie at 4.30pm, Oppenheimer at 7.30pm
  • 27th July 2023: Oppenheimer at 4.30pm, Barbie at 8.30pm

Live out your dream life with the Barbie photo ops

The Projector is known to curate top tier moves, so we’re not surprised that Barbie and Oppenheimer have been shortlisted for their screens. Aside from the shows, the place has also set up IG-worthy photo ops from now till the end of July 2023.

There’s also a vanity with a pink-lined mirror where you can take mirror selfies at. Or, take a seat at the half-black half-pink rocking chair – an ode to the Barbenheimer pairing of movies. Since these photo ops will likely feature your whole self, we recommend coming dressed to the nines so your IG feed will be lit

Guide to Canterbury Road

Whether you’re looking for a pretty place to snap some pre-wedding pics, have a quiet picnic with your friends, or spend a day away from the hustle and bustle of city life, Canterbury Road might just be your new secret haven.

Here’s where you can trick your friends into thinking that you’re not in Singapore ‘cause there just aren’t that many spots on our little island with vast green lands. Although it may seem ulu, Canterbury Road is actually really near Hort Park. All you have to do is continue walking up the hill – trust us, the views are totally worth it.

“Cameron Highlands” in Singapore

Guide to Canterbury Road - walking path

Some of you might have already seen Canterbury Road on TikTok with a number of cyclists filming their way up the hill to access the many photo spots. Known as Singapore’s very own Cameron Highlands – minus the cool climate – the hill has breathtaking views once you’ve conquered the slopes.

Grab a friend and challenge yourself to a short hike. You can choose to start from Hort Park which is about a 10-minute walk away or from Gillman Barracks if you’re looking for a longer, more adventurous route of roughly 1.7km.

Those coming from Kent Ridge Park can get here by following the route from the Canopy Walk towards Canterbury Road. But if walking isn’t really your thing, you can cycle up here as well.

Colonial black & white bungalows

Guide to Canterbury Road - colonial bungalows

Along the road, you’ll be able to spot colonial black and white bungalows which are mostly distinguished by their dark timber beams and white walls. Built between 1903 and 1941, these bungalows are testament to Singapore’s colonial past.

If you think these buildings look familiar, you’re not wrong as there are some of these colonial buildings at Dempsey and Rochester Park as well – bet you didn’t expect to find one here, though. Good news is that it’ll be easier to get photos without being photobombed as this one is relatively unknown.

However, make sure you’re quiet and respectful as these are residential houses.

Picnic & photoworthy spots

Guide to Canterbury Road - open field

Towards the end of the road, you’ll reach the “Canterbury Open Field” – as it is named on Google Maps – and this is where you’ll want to spend some time to admire the view.

With blue skies and a vast open space with greenery extending as far as the eye can see, it’s no wonder this place is such a hit among couples and photographers as well.

Guide to Canterbury Road - picnic idea

You might also want to bring along a camping chair or picnic map to lay down and chill. Pack some food and there you have it – a cute little picnic date.

Guide to Canterbury Road - picnic
At first glance, this looks like it was taken somewhere in New Zealand but hey, it’s right here at Canterbury Road.

Guide to Canterbury Road - bodhi tree

While you’re there, do keep a lookout for the heritage Bodhi Tree standing tall and strong. It offers some shade on an extra sunny day.

Guide to Canterbury Road - tree swing
There are also swings tied around some of the trees nearby for some fun pics.

Guide to Canterbury Road - greenery
We also found an IG-worthy spot at the bottom of the open field.

Visit Canterbury Road for out-of-city vibes

Guide to Canterbury Road - sunset view

We know that planning anything outdoors can be difficult these days with the erratic Singapore weather. To avoid that scorching heat, it’s best to stop by Canterbury Road in the early morning or late evening. Bonus for the latter: you’ll get a glimpse of the sunset and a chance to bask in the golden hour, so we recommend sometime between 6pm and 7pm.

Getting there: Walk 5 minutes from Labrador Park MRT to the bust stop at Alexandra Retail Centre. Take bus 61, 93, 97, 100, or 166 to the bus stop After Hort Park and walk 13 minutes to Canterbury Road.

The Alkaff Mansion at Telok Blangah Hill Park

You’ve seen it on Instagram, TikTok, Lemon8 – basically everywhere. Set atop Telok Blangah Hill Park is the iconic The Alkaff Mansion, with its chic colonial-style structure and red accents. This popular wedding venue and hangout spot has since become a must-go for both tourists and locals alike, thanks to its various F&B offerings and photogenic architecture.

For those who’ve never had the chance to visit this establishment, take this as your sign to go this weekend. Here’s what you can expect:

Home to high society parties in the 1930s

The mansion was formerly known as Mt. Washington.

The mansion was purchased and rebuilt in 1918 by a man named Syed Shaikh bin Abdul Rahman Alkaff, who was part of a family of traders from Yemen – hence the subsequent renaming to The Alkaff Mansion. In the 1930s, this location became a popular destination for high society events – think Bling Empire or Gossip Girl parties in the early days.

Following the tragic events of World War 2, the mansion was acquired by various owners, including the Singapore Government, and subsequently termed as one of the abandoned mansions in Singapore from 1984-1987. Finally in 2019, it was taken over by 1-Group, who owns other properties such as 1-Altitude, Bee’s Knees, and Monti.

Popular wedding venue with indoor & outdoor seating

The Alkaff Mansion has since gone through various renovations in the past years, but retained its distinctive shape and broad stairways – think European holiday home vibes, with its minimalistic design and surrounding greenery.

Out front, the grassy area has become a coveted place for couples to host outdoor weddings and ceremonies. You’ll see the gazebo in which many have said their “I dos”, and the manicured lawn where happy duos have walked down after sealing their forevers.

There’s also the fountain centrepiece encircled by flowery shrubs, AKA the background of every visitor’s Instagram post. Snap your OOTD pictures here, or take a cheeky back view shot with the fountain on the side.

For those looking to host indoor dinners or events, the upper floor provides the space to do so. Wood flooring and ceiling beams add to the mansion’s mellow and sophisticated feel. Dangling lights liven up the area, with cushy leather seats for every guest. Time to take some notes for your next BTO facelift too.

Dine in a garden-themed conservatory

wildseed cafe at the alkaff mansion

But of course, the mansion is more than just a wedding venue. You’ll find Wildseed Cafe here, the perfect place to have brunch and catch up with the girls. Seats are aplenty but you’ll want to chope the ones in the whimsical conservatory outdoors – something you might see on the set of Bridgerton

Food-wise, you can get the Soft Shell Chilli Crab Linguine ($29) or the Truffle Brie Pizza ($28) if you’re famished. You can also get a hearty bowl of Abalone Mushroom Soup ($11) or Pandan Churros ($14) to share with your pals. Yes, we know – dining outdoors in Singapore’s heat can be killer. Order one of the cafe’s signature cocktails ($18) to beat the heat.

For those craving Spanish cuisine, head over to UNA for top-notch tapas and paellas. The restaurant is situated on the second level of Alkaff Mansion, serving traditional Spanish dishes that include the Cinco Jotas ‘5J’ Jamon Iberico ($46) which comes with Iberico ham and toasted bread, as well as Squid Ink Paella (from $62).

The mansion is also home to TXA Gastrobar that serves various specialty cocktails and alcoholic drinks. It is currently undergoing renovation works, and is slated to reopen in mid 2023. You may check back on the TXA Gastrobar website for updates.

Kranji Marshes Guide: What To Do At Singapore’s Largest Natural Freshwater Marshland https://thesmartlocal.com/read/kranji-marshes/ Tue, 30 May 2023 02:00:57 +0000 http://178.128.100.31/read/kranji-marshes/ Find out everything about one of Singapore's largest spot for bird-watchers and nature aficionados: Kranji Marshes

Guide to Kranji Marshes

Mention Kranji Marshes and a mental image of a desolate wasteland filled with mushy soil will probably root itself in your mind. Yet, when I finally made the trip down myself, what awaited was life in the swaying reeds and chirping birds.

Occupying over 56 hectares of land, Kranji Marshes is the largest freshwater marshland in Singapore. But don’t expect a vast expanse of greenery to greet you, as the area open to the general public spans only 8 hectares.

Nevertheless, with its wide array of flora and fauna, Kranji Marshes is a haven for avid bird-watchers and nature-lovers!

Kranji Marshes – Important things to know

kranji marshes map

Unlike other nature reserves, Kranji Marshes is not an extensive trail. The place is divided into two sections – the area open to public, and the core conservation area accessible only via guided walks.

Essentially, the experience for most would be a walk of slightly more than 1 km, before reaching the main area called the Marsh Station, where you can then observe the wildlife in action. Bird-lovers and nature fanatics will find the visit enriching, while even the most urban of city-folk will appreciate being away from glass and concrete for an hour or two.

Here are some tips for you to have a great time at Kranji Marshes:

  • Slather on sunblock, as the sun is brutal.
  • Bring a water bottle to hydrate adequately.
  • Visit the toilet at the entrance, or forever hold your pee-ace.
  • Bring your binoculars along – you’ll need tools to make your bird-spotting adventures much easier.
  • The place closes at 7pm so be sure to scurry out by then.
  • The recommended times for catching aerial creatures in action is 7am-10am, and 4.30pm – 6.30pm.

Enjoy a spectacular view from the top of the Raptor Tower

kranji marshes raptor tower
Behold, the 10.65-metre tall Raptor Tower.

kranjimarshes_17.jpg

This photogenic landmark located right smack in the middle of the Marsh station grants you a 360 degree panoramic view of the beautiful surroundings. In fact, the view game from the top of this tower is so strong, you probably won’t even need an Instagram filter for it.

kranji marshes raptor tower view

You will also probably find it oddly therapeutic looking out from the Raptor Tower. There’s just something utterly assuring about staring serenely towards the ripples in the water and the cascades of brilliant green that stand in stark contrast against the pale blue sky.

Brush up your knowledge on nature under the shade

kranji marshes observation shelter

Along the main trail lies 2 observation shelters.

The first shelter you will come across is the Weaver Shelter. On the walls of the shelter are more information about how Baya Weavers build their nests and attract mates. There are even little logs for you to take a short break while reading up on these little creatures!

kranji marshes woodpecker shelter

Slightly further up lies the Woodpecker Shelter where you can read up on Woodpeckers and their nest boxes.

But heads up, the scenery from there is a construction site so don’t bother staying there for long,

Take a solo photo in the midst of greenery

kranji marshes aerial view

Channel your inner garden elf by snapping photos of yourself in the midst of the verdant surroundings.

kranji marshes kingfisher burrow

And if you’re looking for a gorgeous backdrop, my recommendation would be this hill-looking structure by the name of Kingfisher Burrow.

If you have children with you, let them run wild over the grass-covered arch – they’ll love you for it. And if they are easily fascinated by echoes, get them to step under the arch to create their very own symphony!

Bird-watch with hawk eyes at 2 lookout shelters

birds of kranji marshes

Kranji Marshes has rapidly gained favour with the bird-watching crowd and it’s not hard to see why.

If you’re a bird-watching noob like me, watch out for a sheltered area at the entrance where there are drawings of some species of birds found at Kranji Marshes. Commit some of these to memory and try to identify these birds during your visit!

kranji marshes Moorhen Blind and Swamphen Hide

There are two lookout shelters that are ideal bird-watching havens – Moorhen Blind and Swamphen Hide. These enable you to quietly observe the marsh birds without giving those poor blokes a heart attack. Keep your eyes peeled and volume low to spot a creature stealthily swooping in!

kranji marshes bird-watching

Another popular hotspot for bird-watchers is the Raptor Tower itself. It’s quite a common sight to see groups of birdwatchers armed with their binoculars and cameras at the top of the tower.

Join the free guided tour to see unique marsh birds

kranji marshes west marsh tour

Set within the Core Conservation Area of Kranji Marshes is the West Marsh, an area dedicated to the marsh birdies. While this section is not open to the public, you can join the guided activities NParks has organised to enter the West Marsh. These include bird-watching and walking tours around the West Marsh, so remember to put on a pair of comfy walking shoes.

While these activities do not have a set date and timing, you can check the NParks website for future updates. And good news – registration isn’t required. Simply head to the gate near Moorhen Blind to meet your guides.

(Temporarily closed) Sign up for the Evening Chorus at Kranji Marshes tour

If you want to truly experience all that Kranji Marshes has to offer, sign yourself up for the Evening Chorus at Kranji Marshes tour, previously known as the Kranji Marshes guided tour.

kranji marshes Evening Chorus at Kranji Marshes tour

Conducted once a month on Saturday evenings, participants are led on a 2-hour long journey through the lush greenery of the nature reserve. The tour kicks off at the main entrance before proceeding on to cover the main features of the marshland, including the Moorhen Blind, the Swamphen Hide and the Kingfisher Burrow.

Note: The Evening Chorus at Kranji Marshes is currently unavailable. You may check the NParks website for updates.

Getting to Kranji Marshes

In its place is the Kranji Farm Shuttle service, a 1-day pass ($5/pax) which will take you to Kranji Marshes and other places like Sungei Buloh and Hay Diaries – perfect for those looking for a countryside getaway.

The service only runs on weekends and public holidays. It’ll begin and end at Kranji MRT, with the first and last bus departing from the station at 8.30am and 5.45pm respectively.

Many of us identify the Marina Bay area as the go-to place for luxury shopping and tourist attractions like the casino or the Flower Dome. But just across the riverbank is the Marina Promenade Trail that’s part of the 150km Round Island Route, with its quieter surroundings that make it perfect for a jog.

You’ll find palm trees lining the PC, with unmissable views including Gardens by the Bay and Marina Bay Sands. Our Little Red Dot offers more than just blocks of high-rise buildings and shopping malls. Follow the Robertson Quay Loop and it’ll lead you to the Civic District precinct. Here, you’ll get a refreshing change of surroundings with the colonial-style architecture peppered around the place.

Avid hikers will be familiar with the Henderson PC, and more so the famous Henderson Waves that you’ve probably come across on your IG feed. Standing at 36m above ground, this PC has been crowned the highest pedestrian bridge in Singapore, with aerial views of the surrounding greenery and city skyline.

8 Most Picturesque Park Connectors In Singapore For Chio Fitspo IG Posts

Since the bridge is above ground, you’ll be able to take your fitspo OOTDs from unique angles without needing to Photoshop out any stray buildings in the background. The place is currently under maintenance, but it’s expected to be completed by September 2023, so you can bookmark it for future hangs.

Address: Henderson Road – find it on Google Maps.

6. Punggol PC – Unique bridges at Punggol Waterway Park

8 Most Picturesque Park Connectors In Singapore For Chio Fitspo IG Posts
Since the park is in the heart of the Punggol neighbourhood, you can expect to see plenty of joggers and cyclists at the shared pathways.

Once known to be just another station on the North East Line, Punggol has since brought their A-game with the Punggol Waterway Park that’s part of the North Eastern Riverine Loop. There’s much to check out here, from cycling along the sensory garden to the Recreation Zone that’s great for the kiddos.

But what sets this park apart from the others would be the unique bridges found here, including the Jewel Bridge and the Sunrise Bridge. You’ll be able to spot these along the PC, where you can snap quirky photos with these architectural beauties.

8 Most Picturesque Park Connectors In Singapore For Chio Fitspo IG Posts
The Kelong Bridge pays homage to Punggol’s past heritage of being a fishing village.

And since these bridges aren’t as wide as the shared pathways, cyclists are required to dismount and push their bikes when crossing over. But that’s not to say you can’t take chio pics either, as you can pose next to your 2-wheeled companion.

Address: Sentul Crescent, Singapore 821313 – find it on Google Maps.

7. Bukit Batok East PC – Little Guilin quarry

8 Most Picturesque Park Connectors In Singapore For Chio Fitspo IG Posts
A taste of China without having to pay for pricey plane tickets.

Truth be told, the Bukit Batok Town Park is pretty far out if you don’t stay in the West. But that’s not to say you should forego a visit here, as it’s a charming location housing cool rock formations you won’t commonly come across. Located along the Bukit Batok PC, this place has been dubbed “Little Guilin” for its close resemblance to the actual Guilin in China.

There are giant rocks along the riverbank for when you need to rest and take a breather. Or, set up a picnic mat on the grass and have a quaint lil’ picnic with your pals.

For the best sights, we recommend you to head to the jetty. It’s also the longest jetty in Singapore, so you can take your pick along the walkways to chill and admire the scenery.

Aside from that, you can stroll along the pathways that span across the whole park. And if you happen to be there during sunset or sunrise, you’ll be treated to the jaw-dropping sight of the egg-yolk-coloured skies.

A pretty reservoir and lots of nature all around – while that sounds like New Zealand, it also describes Mandai Park Connector, which takes cyclists from the Singapore Zoo, all the way to Lower Seletar Reservoir Park.

You’ll certainly check off legs day on this 5km trail, but the great waterfront views will serve as a scenic reward, particularly during sunrise. Start from Lower Seletar and head West if you’d like to explore the Central Catchment area after your journey – Bird Paradise is opening in the area soon.

Rower’s Bay is a name you’ve likely heard of but if you’ve yet to find time to visit, here’s a reason to. It lies along the Seletar West Park Connector that takes you from the bay, into Hampstead Wetlands Park and Seletar Aerospace Park – i.e. the area with loads of pretty cafes and restaurants.

According to NParks, this 3km-long trail is best explored on foot but you can choose to explore it on a bike too, if you’re good with your wheels. Be sure to take a break and look up into the skies when you hear a woosh in the distance.  It’s likely a plane taking off from the nearby Seletar Airport

Address: Seletar Club Road – find it on Google maps.

You don’t have to limit your workouts to the 4 walls of a gym. Instead, consider heading out to your preferred PC – you’ll find that they are nothing short of gorgeous from every angle. And to make everyone’s experience a safe and pleasant one, NParks has launched their latest campaign to spread the word about proper usage of these places.

Spot these green and yellow banners around the parks – they serve as reminders to be gracious and considerate of others who are sharing the pathways.

For one, it’s vital to have spatial awareness to avoid unwanted accidents. You’ll want to keep left on your designated path when going at a slower pace, and only veer out to the right when you need to overtake.

Pathways are shared amongst everyone regardless of the speed they’re going at.

Another tip to remember is that PCs aren’t racing tracks – so this means no zooming around as all users should comply with the maximum speed of 25km/h, or 10km/h at selected paths. There are also demarcated Attention Zones in the parks, whereby cyclists and PMD users should reduce their speed and give way to pedestrians.

We’ve all been #blessed with the numerous picturesque PCs that motivate us to get up and head outside for a much-needed cycle or a mooch around the park. And these little steps we take to be gracious and considerate of others will go a long way to making Singapore a City in Nature
