Budget wedding tips for an affordable wedding in Singapore

Tying the knot ain’t cheap. Between the dress, venue, and floral arrangements, you’re looking at shelling out some pretty big bucks. On average, Singaporean couples reportedly spend between $30,000 and $50,000 on their big day.

But, before you go into panic mode, there are ways for you to shrink your wedding bills without forsaking your dreams of a fairytale wedding. Below are some tips to plan an affordable wedding in Singapore, crowdsourced from local brides and grooms who got hitched on a budget. Plus, we’ve also rounded up some attractive DBS wedding deals to help you save even more while still looking luxe and glam.

1. Opt for artificial flowers or DIY bouquets

Talent smelling flowers

Your decor doesn’t have to revolve around freshly cut flowers from the florists. Instead, opt for artificial flowers. They’re much cheaper than the fresh blooms, more environmentally friendly, and can be reused and repurposed in your BTO.

Compared to real flowers which will cost a small fortune and just wilt a few days post-wedding, you can cherish your artificial flowers as memorabilia for years to come. You can save even further by DIY-ing your bouquets and venue decor using fake flowers, moss, and vines, spruced up with some plastic beads and sparkly faux crystals.

2. Bulk buy wedding favours from Taobao

Talent bulk buying online

Ditch the dedicated retailers and bulk buy wedding favours from Taobao. Your guests likely won’t be able to tell the difference, and you’ll be saving hundreds of dollars on things like custom mugs and soap sets.

You now have a cost-efficient way to give your beloved wedding guests something to remember the day by. To maximise your savings, cart out on a Monday. This is because there’s a DBS/POSB Taobao Monday Deal where you can get a $5 discount with a minimum spend of $100. A dollar saved is a dollar earned!

Meanwhile, for couples who dread doing research and comparisons and want one less thing to worry about, most hotel wedding packages include complimentary wedding favours.

3. Check Carousell or bridal store clearances for your gown

Bride & Groom in embrace

For those who aren’t particularly pantang, check Carousell for wedding gowns. Since these dresses have only been worn once, they’re likely in great condition. If you prefer to sift through the offerings in person, research bridal stores that are having clearance sales, or head to lowkey boutiques in places like Far East Plaza. You might find wedding dresses, bridesmaids’ attire, and even tailored suits at a steal.

Apart from Carousell, sites like SHEIN also have plenty of affordable semi-formal dresses for your cocktail reception or pre-wedding photoshoot if you’re going for a more casual look. As part of the DBS/POSB SHEIN deal, you can save $6.50 when you spend a minimum of $65 using a DBS/POSB Card.

4. Use free photo editing apps for pre-wedding photos

save money wedding singapore - Editing wedding pictures

Pre-wedding photos can be poignant, awe-inspiring, and beautifully edited with the use of free editing apps like Meitu. To stitch clips and create videos, deploy the help of apps like CapCut or Canva.

You can even shoot pre-wedding pics yourself or ask friends and family members who can capture decent shots. That way, you can stick to your tight budget and perhaps feel even more comfortable in the casual atmosphere of not posing in front of a stranger.

5. Hire junior or trainee vendors with minimal experience

Wedding vendors are notoriously pricey. But if you can’t live without a professional photographer, videographer, and hair and makeup artist, consider hiring junior vendors. Trainee and junior vendors who are just starting out in the biz tend to charge a more wallet-friendly price than the more in-demand pros.

This could save you a couple of hundred dollars per vendor, which will add up significantly. Plus, they’ll be under the strict tutelage of the seniors in whatever firm they’re representing, so you don’t have to worry about any slipshod standards.

6. Send digital invites instead of paper wedding invitations

Wedding digital invitation template Image adapted from: Canva

Get crafty with free digital invites that will take at most 15 minutes of your time to design and send out. Not only can you ensure they won’t get lost in the mail, you can also save big on physical wedding invitations that your guests may misplace. Plus, you can make changes easily without having to reprint all the cards.

With sites like Canva that have free-to-use templates and a very intuitive interface, you won’t need any graphic design experience to crank out some atas-looking e-vites.

7. Browse wedding fairs & roadshows for discounts

save money wedding singapore - Wedding expo showcase Image credit: SingaporeBrides

Scour for discounts on everything from venues and vendors to entire wedding packages by browsing wedding fairs and roadshows. Events like Blissful One-stop Wedding Shows (BOWS) and Hitcheed are held regularly throughout the year and carry a great deal of wedding steals so you won’t wind up broke.

Plus, they’ll help you save money on things you won’t be able to DIY or skimp on, like photo booths and performers.

MM Galleri’s Showroom, Bent and Light is a venue that will have your friends and family fooled into thinking they’ve been transported into a cave.

It’s not a real cave, of course. This one-of-a-kind space only looks like one because of the structured ceiling and walls that have been crafted from bent marble. Thankfully, that’s as far as the similarities lie. Unlike real caves, you can still connect to your mobile data, so your guests won’t have to resort to sending smoke signals. They’ll still be able to post and tag your nuptials on IG.

Do note, however, that this venue doesn’t provide furniture or food, so you’ll need to work with vendors to arrange for seating, decor, and catering services. It might seem like a lot of work but our wedding planning guide has steps on how to get started.

Wedding gatecrashing game ideas

A wedding day has to be perfect. Everything’s planned to a tee, and there’s no room for chaos – well, except during the wedding gatecrashing games. Though not a must-have, wedding gatecrashes can be the highlight of the day for those who choose to include it in the itinerary.

You may have seen videos that resemble a frat party with swinging sausages and topless sweating men. No worries, this list isn’t like that. Below are some family-friendly games that everyone can enjoy that are still fun.

What is gatecrashing?

wedding gatecrashing - groomsmen

The gatecrashing ceremony is a set of challenges for the groom –  and groomsmen – to complete before meeting the bride for the first time on the wedding day. Take it as a grand show of his commitment to his soon-to-be wife. These tasks are often set by the bridesmaids and tend to be a little cheeky and playful.

The session usually happens at the very start of the day before the rest of the wedding activities. Traditionally, it should take place just outside the bride’s family home – for HDB dwellers, this usually means along the corridor, or at the lift lobby.

Tip: The bride has to stay in her room and won’t be able to watch this ceremony so it’ll be a good idea to take lots of videos for her.

1. Walk down memory lane

wedding gatecrashing - memory game

For this memory game, print out a series of pictures of the couple. The more the photos, the tougher the challenge. The gameplay is simple – the groom’s task is to put these photos together in chronological order of when they were taken.

Tip: These photos can also be used to decorate the wedding reception table later on if you wish to kill 2 birds with one stone.

How to prepare:

  • Print out around 10 photographs of the couple.
  • Don’t forget to record the dates these photos were taken to “check” the groom’s answer.

2. The most intense quiz

wedding gatecrashing - quiz

Prepare a list of some of the toughest questions related to the bride you can think of. The groom has to answer them. Easy… right? Not really. Like a difficult PSLE maths exam question this challenge is made to make the groom sweat.

Suggested quiz questions:

  1. What are the last 3 digits of her NRIC?
  2. Date and content of first ever Instagram post?
  3. What is her horoscope sign, including rising and moon?
  4. Go-to drink store order?
  5. What about bubble tea order? Sugar level included.
  6. How many days have you guys been in the relationship?

What you’ll need:

  • Prepare the answers with the bride beforehand. Chances are, most of the bridesmaids won’t know all the answers too.

3. Shake it off

wedding gatecrashing - shake it off

This challenge is designed to make the boys twerk – aggressively. The gameplay is as such: line up the groom and groomsmen and tie a raffia string around their waist. Attached to each string is a tissue box filled with ping pong balls. The goal? Shake till all the balls drop out.

What you’ll need:

  • Empty tissue boxes
  • Ping pong balls
  • Raffia string
  • Scissors
  • Tape

4. Eyes, nose, lips

We’re not talking about the iconic Taeyang song!

wedding gatecrashing - guess the eyebrows

How well does the groom know his bride? Here, you’ll put it to the test. This seemingly innocuous challenge features simple sheets of paper with cut outs stuck on them. Each sheet features facial features like noses, eyebrows, and mouths – and one of them is the bride’s. The groom has to identify his SO’s features. Spoiler alert, it’s harder than it looks!

  • Print out similarly-shot portraits of 5 ladies including the bride.
  • Cut out each facial feature and stick them onto separate sheets of paper.

Tip: Print the photos in black and white to ramp up the challenge. Also, it’s a good idea to use a clipboard to ensure that the flimsy sheets of paper stay put during the game.

5. Group poses

wedding gatecrashing - poses

The groomsmen are the groom’s emotional support system and there’s no reason why they can’t offer physical support on his big day too. Group poses can be a great physical challenge to diversify the challenge from just mental tasks and memory games.

Things you’ll need:

  • Prepare some reference photos beforehand – feel free to use our piece on CNY group poses for inspiration.

6. Draw the bride in 30 seconds

draw the bride

It isn’t news that many grown men groan at the idea of having to do arts and crafts. Their least favourite class in primary school comes back to haunt them big time in this simple game of “draw the bride”.

Each groomsman has 5 seconds on the drawing board, after which, they have to pass it on to the next guy. The groom goes last and has to try his best to finesse the tag-team drawing into a fine portrait of his beloved. Trust us, everyone’s going to have a good laugh.

How to prepare:

  • Prepare a clipboard, pen, and paper.

7. Dance challenge

If drawing doesn’t make them groan, dancing probably will. K-pop dances are one of the best options for this with many short tutorials available online. We highly recommend
NAYEON “POP!” by Twice which requires hand-eye coordination for the best laughs.

How to prepare:

  • Do a test run with the bridesmaids to see how long it takes to learn the dance so you’ll know how much time to give the boys on the day.

8. The 4 flavors of life

 the four flavours of life

Suan tian ku la (酸甜苦辣) translates to sour, sweet, bitter and spicy: the 4 ingredients needed to make – not The Powerpuff Girls but – the groom sweat. The blindfolded groom will have to guess what food is fed to him. Bridesmaids also typically try giving him things he dislikes.

Below are some wackier picks you can consider getting:

  • Sour: Warheads gummies, greek yoghurt
  • Sweet: Liquorice
  • Bitter: Bitter gourd, black coffee, herbal tea
  • Spicy: Samyang spicy noodle, wasabi

How to prepare:

  • Ready some bowls, utensils, the ingredients chosen, and a blindfold.

9. Promise recital

vows

A promise recital is a common way to end the entire gatecrash on a sweet note. Just before heading in to meet his bride, task the groom to read out a series of vows as a grand declaration of how he plans to treat her with love. Xiao swit.

These vows are usually shouted from the front door of the house and have to be loud enough for the bride to hear them from her room.

How to prepare:

  • A print out a list of vows for the groom to recite – this should be different from the ROM vows! While it’s not uncommon for the bride to prepare the text, a more meaningful alternative would be to ask the groom to come up with a list of promises beforehand.

Other tips for planning a gatecrash:

  • Always find out what the groom’s boundaries are before the day: are there any things in the no-go zone? You don’t want someone getting a stomach ache from a ghost pepper challenge – not on his big day!
  • Have a forfeit ready to spice things up. We recommend jump rope on cheap acupressure mats that you can get online for $5.
  • It’s easy to overrun so assign a timekeeper. Weddings often run on a tight schedule and delays can throw off the timeline of the day.
  • Check if the grooms and groomsmen would like to have a say in the games beforehand.
  • Start preparing weeks in advance so you can purchase the resources online at a cheaper price.

Is gatecrashing necessary?

It’s an ancient Chinese wedding custom that many Singaporeans still practice, but it’s by no means a die-die must have. These days, most people do it for fun more than anything else and the decision is entirely up to the bride and groom.

Sometimes, couples choose to skip it in favour of saving time or if the groom feels uncomfortable with doing the challenges.

How much angbao do you give for a wedding gatecrash?

Bridesmaids or “jiemei”s heads up! If you didn’t already know, the groom is often expected to hand out angbaos to “convince” you to let them pass through. Usually, these angbaos are also handed out as a symbol of appreciation for the time you’ve put in to help out with the wedding, and cover ad hoc expenses.

Much like CNY angbaos, the amount given can vary a lot. A very rough range is $28-$288. Though, it’s important to keep in mind that at the end of the day, the bride and groom shouldn’t feel pressured to give beyond their means.

Have a blast with wedding gatecrashing

From wedding gown selection to venue booking, there are so many things to think about when it comes to “the big day”. Gatecrashing is certainly not the priority but it can be a fun side project for everyone to have a good laugh before whizzing off with the rest of the wedding plans for the day. Plan it right and you’ll have something that the group will remember for years to come!

A proclamation of love, symbol of commitment, or straight up flex; whatever you may call it, there’s no denying that weddings are a big deal. Chances are, depending on how big of a deal you want to make it, you’d also want a one-of-a-kind wedding venue your guests won’t shut up about.

Try a cave, or more specifically, MM Galleri’s “Bent and Light” showroom which looks like one, minus the primitivity.

Stone age, but make it bougie

From $500 an hour, this 4,000sqft event space is worlds away from the usual banquet halls and hotel restaurants, and something you can finally afford to cave in to.

MM Galleri’s showroom features meandering marble walls and contorted sculptures, which add to the ‘bent’ aesthetic of the cave. It’s a signature aesthetic of theirs which they’ve acquired through patented technology that allows them to mould and carve any stone to their liking.

MM Galleri - Geo Bar
In dim lighting, the Geo Bar emits a golden glow that highlights its natural ridges.

Many of the luxurious furniture pieces are made from natural materials, such as the Geo Bar which is sculpted from diamond fall granite. Think Flintstones meets Keeping up with the Kardashians.

The venue is also filled with unique artworks and installations. Even the light fixtures, which resemble a stream of floating petals, are unique and elegant. Nothing in here is placed without design and deliberation.

If you’re not completely sold on the marble, the showroom even has a resort-themed space on the other end, perfect for a “business in front, party in the backarrangement.

MM Galleri - Resort
The resort-themed section features a more tropical, warm-toned vibe.

Its tunnel-like shape also makes it ideal for an intimate wedding of around 50 guests where everyone can sit along a long dinner table. They also have a comprehensive 360-degrees virtual tour of the space, for you to envision your wedding setup better.

If bae hasn’t put a ring on it, the MM Galleri showroom can be rented for a slew of other events like corporate gatherings, photoshoots, workshops, food tastings, and even parties. Did I mention, JJ Lin and Gentle Bones even shot their music video for At Least I Had You over here?

Wedding planning in Singapore

He finally did it. He got down on one knee and asked for your hand in marriage. Congrats, girl! And now that the excitement has simmered, it’s time to actually start putting together the wedding.

Maybe you’ve had your Pinterest board ready ever since the two of you applied for a BTO. But between finding a venue and picking out what to wear, we know the process can be a lot to handle. Thankfully, we’ve taken the guesswork out of what needs to be done with this nifty guide to planning a wedding in Singapore:

Setting a budget

Talking about money is often taboo, but it’s a necessary first step you two are going to have to take before you get to the fun stuff like menu options for the occasion. On average, a wedding in Singapore with a banquet will cost about $30,000 for about 200 guests. This doesn’t factor in a dowry, betrothal ceremony or any additional expenses for a honeymoon.

budgeting

The figure’s astronomical, so now’s a good time to discuss how much each of you will be contributing, and if parents and other relatives will be chipping in to lighten the financial burden.

You don’t need exact figures at this time, but it’ll be good to have a ballpark first. This will help guide you in discussing areas you’re willing to splurge on, and what you can do without. Like if capturing memories is more important, you’ll want to invest in a better photography and videography team, and maybe stick to one gown to save on rentals.

red packet

A folly for many couples who hold a wedding banquet is expecting to make back or even profit from congratulatory angbaos from friends and family invited. But this mistake can literally be costly, should the banquet have to be downsized if Ms ’Rona makes a comeback. It’s also in poor taste to expect every guest to follow exact angbao rates posted online.

Take the price of the banquet as what you’d be willing to pay for in full. Any angbaos you get at the banquet can be considered an additional blessing to your marriage.

There are plenty of hidden wedding costs you might overlook while budgeting as well, such as corkage fees and printing out custom invitations. Budget-conscious couples might want to look up ways to save money for their wedding by following wedding forums for cost-cutting tips. You’ll at least save a pretty penny you can then use to splurge on for the honeymoon.

Choosing your wedding date

Finances aside, the next thing you’ll need to pick is your wedding date. Guys, listen up, as this is the date you’ll need to remember for years on end once the wedding’s over.

Generally, most people choose to have the ROM solemnisation on the same day as their wedding banquet. But take note that you’ll need to apply for your marriage license at least 21 days beforehand. So if you plan to have your wedding on 21st February, be sure to send in your application by 30th January.

You’ll want a date far in advance so you’ll have enough time to book your vendors, especially if the ones you’re looking at are popular. At least a year ahead should suffice to secure major ones like your venue, coordinators, and photographers.

Certain popular or auspicious dates will also have a surge in the number of couples looking to get married. While these will surely be easier to remember come anniversaries, skip these if you have specific vendors in mind for your wedding. Chances are, they’ve been booked out far in advance on such dates.

These include peak periods from March to September, and in November and December, after holidays like Chinese New Year and taboo occasions like Hungry Ghost Festival. Dates with repeated numbers like 2nd February 2022 will also have their fair share of weddings.

For more traditional families, picking an auspicious date is key to an equally prosperous marriage. These days, you can make an appointment with an online feng shui master – just ready you and your partner’s birth dates and times for the calculation.

Finalising your guestlist

For such a joyous occasion, it’s easy to jump the gun and want to invite every person you’ve known in existence. But hold up from inviting the whole village – more invitees means increasing costs to feed them.

guests at a wedding
@mikechenphotography

Weddings at banquet halls require a minimum number of guests in attendance to book the venue, so you can start with this figure to build your guestlist. After including must-invites, such as immediate family members, figure out how many guests each side is allowed to invite.

Take into account friends your parents would want to invite as well. If you know their list is going to be extensive, give a solid number so that you leave enough room for your own kakis to be there. As a compromise, you can have separate guestlists for various parts of the wedding, like the ceremony and the banquet, and only have certain people attend one event over the other.

Picking your wedding vendors

A huge contributor to wedding planning stress is booking your vendors. Options are aplenty, but it’s a strategic game trying to match vendors you’re interested in with the budget you can afford. Plus, popular ones either have a long waiting list or get booked up quickly. Here are the basic ones, and the minimal time in advance you’ll need to get the vendors you want:

Venue – Book 1 year in advance

While non-hotel weddings are gaining in popularity, hotel weddings often offer an all-in-one solution for a substantial part of the wedding planning process.

With weddings practically being a weekly event, hotels are usually able to take care of details beyond just providing a venue and food. This could include premade invites, floral decor, and even wedding guest favours.

Some, like The Westin Singapore, even throw in special gifts for the betrothed couple, like a free night’s stay in the Bridal Suite, and complimentary parking for guests.

With the limited number of wedding venues available, these are usually the first things to be snapped up by engaged couples. It’s a game of fastest fingers first, so once you’ve confirmed a wedding date, you’ll want to quickly put in a reservation for the venue of your choice. Give yourself at least 1 year in advance for popular venues.

Caterer – Book 6 months in advance

Another plus point of holding your wedding at a hotel – a designated in-house caterer with set menus to choose from. This is especially handy if you’re one to answer “anything lor” whenever bae asks what you want for dinner.

wedding catering

Foodie couples who might want to put more thought into the menu for the day should start booking an external caterer at least 6 months in advance. Finalising the menu will come in at a later date, about 3 months before the wedding. This is when tasting sessions will be held, so you’ll get a better idea of what you’ll be eating on that day.

For requests on dietary requirements, you can bring this up with your caterer early on to see what options are available. Make sure your guests inform you of their restrictions at least a month before the wedding too, so there’s ample time to design courses for everyone to enjoy.

Photography & videography – Book 6 months in advance

Weddings are a once-in-a-lifetime event, so it’s natural that you’ll want every waking moment memorialised for eternity. It only makes sense, then, that you spend extra time looking for a photographer and videographer who would be able to capture your best Kodak moments of your wedding.

Do your homework by looking thoroughly through potential vendors’ portfolios. Some may be apt for studio photography, but not the impromptu shots you’ll need for the actual wedding.

couple photography
Check how photographers do on outdoor shoots too.

It also helps to do a vibe check on your photographer’s style to see if their editing style matches your aesthetic.

Once you’ve shortlisted a few photographers and videographers to work with, read the fine print on their rates. Look out for clauses like copyright ownership, post-production charges, and how many digital or hard copy images you’ll be getting when booking a package.

wedding poses
Aside from knowing your angles, it helps to practice poses with your partner ahead of your shoot.

Many also charge on a time block basis, ranging from a half-day to full-day shoot. Whichever you’re booking, make complete use of your time by coming prepared.

Follow wedding photoshoot tips like having comfy shoes to change into in-between locations. It helps to also know your best angles, so you save time having to review every single shot that’s being taken.

Bride & groom outfits, hair & makeup artist – Book up to 8 months in advance

Quite possibly, the highlight of any wedding is when the groom has his first peek of his new bride in her flowing gown. Yes, she’s already beautiful, but we know it’s partly due to her wedding dress, hair, and makeup that’s adding to her glow.

wedding dress

For your own show-stopping reveal, you’ll want to start hunting for your wedding dress early on, at least 8 months before the wedding. If you want to tailor your own, add in an additional 1-2 months so there’s time for multiple fittings leading up to the big day.

If not, you can easily head down to a bridal boutique for try-ons before you say “yes” to the dress. Many such places give brides the ability to rent over buying the dress as a more affordable alternative. They’ll even include alteration services, so your dress will be form-fitting to your figure.

wedding gown and suit

Grooms, we haven’t forgotten about you. Thankfully, most bridal boutiques also have a section for grooms to pick out their suits .

Bridal boutiques often offer packages for multiple gown rentals for your wedding banquet, with hair and makeup thrown in as a perk. Otherwise, use a similar timeline if you’re looking to book separate hair and makeup artists. Make note of days you’ll need them, such as for your pre-wedding shoot, gatecrashing ceremony, and wedding banquet.

wedding makeup

Some hair and makeup artists can also extend their services to mums of the couple, as well as bridesmaids. If that’s something you want to take up, you can schedule a trial run of makeup looks for all parties ahead of the wedding at an additional cost.

Check in with your MUA for this, as some do already include this in their package. This will prevent clashes in palettes, and speed up the process the day of.

For the rest of the wedding party, you’ll want to give your bridesmaids and groomsmen at least 2 months in advance if they’ll be purchasing their outfits according to the colour scheme or theme you’ve set. If you require matching, tailored suits and dresses, have them ready 1 month in advance so there’s enough time for alterations.

Florists, stylists & coordinators – Book 6 months in advance

Before picking a florist, stylist or coordinator, it’s best to come up with an overarching theme, like “beach paradise” or “wildflower garden”, so you know what colours you’ll want to work with, and possible flowers and decor to get.

The general rule of thumb for booking these vendors is at least 6 months in advance. This is enough time, especially, for florists and stylists to prepare bouquets and props needed for your wedding.

Although wholesale florists are where you can get cheap flowers, we recommend sticking with professional florists for large-scale events like weddings. Flowers will feature at least in the bridal and bridesmaids’ bouquets, as well as the groom and groomsmen’s boutonnieres, so you won’t want to skimp on the florals here.

If you insist on DIY-ing, you could get away with buying dried flowers, which last much longer than fresh-cut ones. You can start prepping the bouquets and table decor of dried flowers way in advance too.

wedding stylist

Those working with a florist may want to rope in a stylist as well, so your wedding has a polished look. Apart from putting vases of flowers on tables, wedding stylists also help to create a more personalised venue with props, backdrops, and wedding arches. Basically, they’re the ones who can bring your Pinterest board visions to life.

Budget brides who really want to spare their wallets from serious damage might be able to do away with a florist and stylist with meticulous planning. But it’ll help to spend on a coordinator for your actual wedding day so that events go according to plan.

It’s your big day, after all, so you should be spending it taking in every moment. Let the coordinator worry about the setup while you get ready to say “I do”.

Tying up the final details

We’ve covered the major vendors, but there are details you’ll want to secure for your wedding as well.

Invitations, wedding stationery & party favours

Many hotels provide invitations, stationery, and wedding favours when you book a banquet with them.

If you’d rather go the custom route, you can opt to make digital invites and stationery for free on Canva, an online design software that includes tonnes of free templates you can play around with. For paper invites, you’ll want to find a printer at least 3 months before the wedding. This is enough time to send them out 2 months pre-wedding, and collect and confirm RSVPs 1 month ahead of time.

As for party favours, you’ll find the usual array of chocolates included in most hotel banquet packages. Cute as these are with your wedding date emblazoned on them, don’t be surprised if these are left behind by guests after dinner.

Practical gifts like an eco-cutlery set or even a candle are the way to go these days. Or, cater everyone’s breakfast the next day by putting out pastries with mini jars of jams in paper bags to take home. These will surely be a hit with guests of all ages.

Delegation of tasks for your wedding party

Your BFFs have been with you through thick and thin, so it’s no wonder you’ve entrusted them with the important role of sister or brother in your wedding party. They’re not just there to look pretty in photos, of course, you can enlist them to help out with the wedding preparations too.

Confirm your wedding party around 1-2 months after your engagement, especially if they’ll be largely involved in the ceremony and banquet.

To prevent a Bridezilla or Groomzilla moment, give them a heads up on what you expect your wedding party to do before they commit to the role. Some would be comfortable just helping out at reception, while others might be okay taking on tasks like emceeing for the evening.

Once you’ve sounded out their availability, you can begin delegating tasks. Put together a schedule of what they’re assigned and due dates, if any, like putting up decor for the bridal car or reception table. It helps to have someone in-charge for each task, so people will know who to turn to regarding duties like angbao collection, and checking the guestlist at reception.

Payment & tips for your vendors & wedding party

Keep a close eye on when payment is due for each of your vendors. Some will require a deposit up front, with full payment expected by the end of the wedding night. It’s best to prepare the cheques ahead of time or set up a scheduled online payment so you won’t incur late fees and interest.

wedding angbao

It’s also an unspoken rule that vendors will receive a tip in the form of an angbao for their service. How much you tip is at your discretion, although the going rate is about $8-$38 per person, including the solemniser, banquet staff, photographer and videographer, and coordinator.

While your wedding party will unlikely ask for payment, it’ll be a kind gesture to prepare angbao for them too. For their sacrificed weekends in making your dream wedding come true, a small gesture of $28-$88 would be appreciated.

Wedding speeches & vows

You probably have a million and one things you love about your partner, but not everyone’s going to sit through an hour-long speech while you wax lyrical about the Romeo to your Juliet.

That said, we recommend writing down word-for-word what you want to say in your speeches and vows, so you’re not left fumbling over words while you’re on stage. It helps to practice saying them too, before the big day. The last thing you want is to be caught off guard by an offhand remark you thought you edited out but left in by mistake.

Plan your dream wedding with The Westin Singapore

Between “Will you marry me?” and “I do” involves a helluva lot of planning before you get to settle in with your partner for the rest of your life. With multiple vendors to juggle, we’d understand if you would want to throw in the towel early and elope instead.

Engagement rings in Singapore

It’s a tradition as old as time: when you’re proposing to the love of your life, you have to get down on one knee and bestow upon them a sparkling ring. But who ever dictated that engagement rings in Singapore die-die have to feature a diamond, and that the greater the carat weight, the higher chances there’ll be of your girlfriend becoming your fiancée?

We know that guys don’t really have a formal resource when it comes to choosing the perfect ring with which to pop the question. It’s also understandable to be averse to straight-up asking their partner in order to retain the element of surprise and thoughtfulness, as opposed to going “Eh what ring you want ah?” like you’re getting their bubble tea order.

So to help nudge you in the right direction and open your eyes to the possible options beyond the typical diamond ring, here are three Singaporean women’s ideas of “what a girl wants, what a girl needs” when it comes to the dream engagement ring.

1. Diamonds are too run-of-the-mill and don’t justify the high price tag

Singaporean Couple - Chan Huiwen

Like many financially-savvy ladies, Huiwen’s never been too keen on splashing cash on tons of designer clothes and luxury goods on the regular. She also finds the average diamond ring wildly overrated, and too run-of-the-mill to justify having her boo dip that much into his savings. To her, it only makes sense to invest in something that’s actually going to set her apart.

What she’d prefer is to have something that is quirky and unique. As someone who expresses her personal style through an outlandish sense of fashion and scene-stealing shades of hair dye depending on the season, Huiwen feels that being proposed to with the typical diamond ring would simply be off-brand.

2. I want something that is unique and characteristic of our love

Singaporean couple - Kimberly Wong

Echoing the sentiments of high cost over something that’s super commonplace, Kimberly can’t wrap her head around having her partner fork out thousands of dollars for an indistinguishable ring. The typical polished and perfectly cut diamonds don’t appeal to her, but she finds raw diamond rings to be a more rustic and ethereal looking substitute.

Beyond the unconventional appearance, Kimberly also finds that a raw diamond would hold a lot of sentimental meaning and be characteristic of the bond between her and her partner: “a love that is a diamond in the rough, raw and needs to be polished and perfected over time”.

3. Diamonds are a token sum that can be better spent on other things

Singaporean couple - Beatrice

On top of overpriced diamond rings, Beatrice has never been big on the general grandeur of weddings, and all things dollar bill-heavy that go into what she feels is a very private union. She believes that sinking heaps of money on a diamond ring is akin to slapping a token sum on “a love that shouldn’t be quantified by carats and zeroes on the price tag.

She would rather spend the money on throwing an unforgettable wedding party for her friends and family, invest a couple of thousands on a house with her partner and “furniture that’s not from Taobao” to fill it with, and a solid honeymoon. As for Beatrice’s preferred ring, something simple with a small precious stone set on a plain band would be right up her alley.

Unique and customisable engagement rings from Madly Gems

Every woman is different, as are their tastes and idea of the perfect engagement ring. It’s becoming less and less common to yearn for a big ol’ rock in the form of a plain diamond ring, as modern ladies veer towards rings that are meaningful and symbolic, and able to showcase their personal style or tell a story.

Madly Gems, also known as Madly, specialises in premium bespoke jewellery that is 100% customisable. They don’t follow “templates”, and what you want is what you’ll get – right down to the very last detail from the hand-drawn design stage to crafting your dream ring in solid 18K gold with colourful, natural gems.

Ask around for the “market rate” of engagement rings in Singapore and you might get formulas like forking out one, three, even five months’ worth of your pay. Considering that it’s a once-in-a-lifetime investment signifying your lifelong love and union, don’t be afraid to save up and splurge a little more to craft something that fits the love of your life to a T

After all, you are getting involved in creating the perfect customised engagement ring.

Fun fact: Madly Gems is the only jeweller in Singapore that is in the International Colored Gemstone Association (ICA), a global authority to ensure that all gems are ethically sourced. This means you’ll be able to purchase jewellery with peace of mind, and your beloved will be able to rock it proudly without doubts of its quality or origins.

Wedding plans marred by Phase 2 (HA)

Walking down the aisle to the gleeful cheers and the teary eyes of their closest family and friends, and saying “I do” is a fairytale moment most women dream of for years. But for unlucky couples who planned to tie the knot last year, getting married in a Covid climate has proven to be an uphill battle with all the fluctuating restrictions in place.

Breaking into Phase 3 was a beacon of hope for many engaged couples, especially those who had put off plans to get hitched in 2020 with many rushing to plan their weddings before cases surged again.

From losing thousands of dollars in vendor deposits to rushing to make alternative plans, these three brides detail the struggles they faced with the sudden Phase 2 (Heightened Alert) restrictions and how they weathered the storm.

Note: Some names have been changed to protect the identities of the individuals.

Wasted effort adhering to previous restrictions

Movies such as Bride Wars and 27 Dresses have primed us for the organised chaos that goes on behind the scenes of planning a wedding. But to add fire to the flames, those with weddings planned in May had to work their plans around a couple of unforeseen circumstances.

Jocelyn originally planned to have a 250-pax guest list when she first started planning her wedding two years ago. With Phase 3 in effect, she’d already shaved down the guestlist to 100 pax earlier in the year.

Pre-Event Testing Covid MOH - Weddings cancelled due to covid

She’d even gone as far as to wait until one month before the actual date to send out invitations in case something else cropped up. Life threw them another curve-ball a mere two weeks before their wedding day with the announcement that all unvaccinated guests had to undergo Pre-Event Testing (PET) – something their hotel couldn’t accommodate.

Having to burden their guests with the inconvenience of getting tested was one thing, there was also the issue of who would foot the cost of the test which was around ~$50 per pop. Then came Phase 2 Heightened Alert and its set of rules.

One week prior to the wedding, we had to cancel our banquet. We discussed whether or not we should postpone or cancel the wedding. It was definitely one of the toughest decisions to make as we had planned this more than 2 years ago.” shares Jocelyn who only went ahead with her solemnisation in the end.

Mad rush to contact vendors & postpone wedding date

Even if you’re not the least bit superstitious or into all the hocus pocus of numerology, it’s always nice to have your wedding fall on a date that holds a special place in your heart. After all, this date will be the one you’ll be celebrating for the rest of your married life.

And for one bride Clara and her husband, this day was 22nd May – the same anniversary of their couplehood. This wedding had been two years in the making, and the onset of Covid last year had already driven her and her husband to push the ceremony back to May this year in order to kope the date they had set their hearts on.

But with just days to the actual wedding, the announcement of the no dine-in rule threw their wedding plans into utter chaos with all wedding banquets effectively cancelled.

Then came the mad rush of contacting multiple vendors to push back the wedding date. “This gave us a lot of stress because not only did we have to replan everything, but our deposit money was also on the line,” recounts Clara.

And while Clara managed to reshuffle her vendors, bride Jocelyn, wasn’t as lucky and ended up losing a few thousands. The bridal company she had signed up with – and a pretty big name in the industry, at that – had turned her a cold shoulder following the Phase 2 announcement. The couple initially paid for three gowns and two suits, but with only the solemnisation on the agenda, they only needed one outfit each.

We were quite disappointed with the way they (bridal company) treated us after the regulations were released because we were so willing to pay up when they upsold us.

Jocelyn had reached out to propose splitting the costs of the damages and was willing to foot a small penalty fee for the last minute changes, only to receive sporadic replies from the company with little to no solution even though her ceremony was days away.

Gatecrash & tea ceremony affected by the 2 pax visitor cap

Most Chinese weddings begin in the wee hours of the morning with the gatecrash. An epic customary showdown where the groom and his posse battle a series of hilarious obstacles to claim his bride – only when the bridesmaids are appeased and monetarily compensated with big angbaos, that is.

Not being able to have a gatecrash was one thing, but for a third bride Tasha, it was complying with the 2-pax limit that posed an issue.

Makeup Wedding - Covid Phase 2

Having only two visitors per household had her pulling all stops just in order to go ahead with her solemnisation and tea ceremony. Her makeup for the day had to be completed at someone else’s house as the photographer and her husband already made up the numbers.

Then came the sacrifice of giving up the videographer. She had wanted both a photographer and videographer to be present to capture every moment of the day as a memento for them to look back on as they grow old together, but something had to give.

Masked march-in and first kiss as a married couple

Every bride remembers her shining moment walking down the aisle, flanked by her closest family and friends, the love of her life waiting for her at the other end. But these brides will always remember a masked march-in. On top of that, the restrictions in place also meant that there would be no official husband and wife kiss, as the removal of masks was not allowed.

I couldn’t help but feel a little upset, being unable to see the faces of my family and friends because everyone is protected and covered.

At the same time, it’s epic because it’s still a unique ceremony in masks. No one would’ve thought to experience this (before Covid). I can also proudly say that our relationship made it against all odds!

Finding the silver lining to this dark Covid-cloud

With all deposits made and invitations sent, it was the sheer tenacity and the support of loved ones that helped these brides follow through with their solemnisations. And while there were sacrifices to be made in terms of guests, forgoing the tea ceremony and gatecrash, there was a silver lining to this dark Covid-cloud too.

Choosing to remember her ceremony as a joyous memory in a chaotic time, Clara says it was heartening to witness the unwavering support and patience of those around her as they put up with endless changes, and “risked their lives, going above and beyond to give their blessings and attend the solemnisation.” She went on to share the indescribable feeling of being overcome with emotions as she “turned around after signing the papers, to see a garden full of people celebrating alongwith her.

For Jocelyn, it was being able to have open and clear communication with her partner when there was a whole laundry list of things to do to adjust to the ever-changing regulations. Splitting the responsibilities to speed things up and relying on each other helped them build a stronger bond in spite of the mountain of challenges they faced on the road to marriage.

Tips for getting married in a Covid climate

And when asked if they had any tips for couples stuck in the same rut, here’s the sentiment they echoed: In tumultuous times, how you choose to perceive a certain change can make or break your special day.

On this note, Clara strongly urges couples to “Stop and smell the roses. Try to enjoy the process and appreciate the intimate, genuine moments with people who truly care. The rest of the world can wait.

And on top of keeping your fiancé/fiancée as your right hand man/woman through all the planning, Jocelyn advises “maintaining good communication and finding a common ground whenever you have differences in opinions.

She goes on to share that it’s wise to “trust your partner to make good judgement calls,  anticipate changes, and have a back-up plan.

And though no one can confidently say when life will resume as usual, these married couples have embraced their reality and ridden out the storm. There’s still hope that at the end of this mini Circuit Breaker, good news awaits them and all engaged couples looking to proceed with their wedding banquets.
